The Future of Sussex Children’s Titles
It has been over two weeks since King Charles II ascended the throne, yet there is still no answer to a seemingly simple question: Will Archie Harrison and Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, the children of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, become Prince and Princess, addressed as their Royal Highnesses?
According to a Royal Spokesperson, the future holds something amazing for them.
However, one Royal commentator suggests that Archie and Lilibet may not receive the HRH styling they are entitled to following the death of Queen Elizabeth.
British journalist Jonathan Saxerdotty believes that it may not be particularly relevant for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s children to be known as Prince and Princess.
Buckingham Palace has repeatedly stated that the question of titles will not be addressed until after the official mourning period for Queen Elizabeth ends on September 26.
However, during press briefings, Royal Spokespersons have given intriguing responses when asked about the timing of the decision.
In one instance, they simply stated that the future is an amazing thing, as reported by the Daily Mail.
According to guidelines established by King George in 1917, grandchildren of the Sovereign in the male line, such as Archie and Lilibet, automatically become Royal Highnesses and Princes or Princesses upon the accession of a new Sovereign.
However, past monarchs, including Queen Elizabeth, have deviated from these rules, using royal orders called letters patent or making announcements to assign different titles to members of the royal family.
The unique situation faced by Archie and Lilibet stems from their parents’ decision to step back from their roles as working members of the royal family in January 2020.
As part of this arrangement, Prince Harry and Meghan relinquished their own Royal Highness titles, which their children would have inherited as Prince and Princess of Sussex.
Shortly after the announcement of Queen Elizabeth’s death, the official royal succession page was updated to reflect the new monarch.
However, Archie and Lilibet were still listed as Master and Miss Mountbatten-Windsor, rather than Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet of Sussex.
The question remains: Will Charles allow Archie and Lily to be recognized as royals in the family?
The answer is yet to be seen.
It is a matter that will be decided in due course.
In the meantime, we can only speculate on what the future holds for these young members of the royal family.
