Prince Harry has reportedly decided to postpone any decision-making regarding the titles of his children, Archie and Lilibet, following the Queen’s death.
The two children, born to Harry and his wife Meghan Markle, are entitled to be named Prince and Princess as grandchildren of the new monarch.
However, their titles have not been officially changed, as the Royal Family’s website still lists them as Master Archie Mountbatten-Windsor and Miss Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor.
According to The Times, Harry expressed his desire for his children to have the freedom to choose their own titles during a brief discussion with King Charles III after the Queen’s passing.
This delay in deciding their titles comes at a time when the British monarchy is said to be moving towards a more streamlined and European-style royalty.
Constitutional experts suggest that if this transition occurs, Archie and Lilibet may not receive these titles.
Commenting on the matter, Miss Nicoll from Palace Confidential on Metropolis stated that Charles has long awaited a more streamlined monarchy.
She mentioned that Queen Margaret had previously stripped family members, other than those in the direct line of ascension, of their HRH titles.
While it remains uncertain if Archie and Lilibet will receive the Duke of Edinburgh title, it would be seen as an extraordinary olive branch and an act of reconciliation if they did.
However, it is likely that Charles would expect Harry and Meghan to show respect for the institution if they were to accept these titles.
In 2021, there were suggestions that Charles intended to limit the number of key royals when he becomes king, potentially preventing Archie from becoming a prince.
However, such a move could damage his relationship with the Sussexes.
To change Archie’s right to be a prince and Lily’s right to be a princess, Charles would need to issue a letters patent.
Currently, Archie and Lily hold the titles of prince and princess with the style HRH, whether or not their parents choose to use them on a daily basis.
During a bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan argued that Archie was denied the title of prince due to his race.
However, as the seventh in line to the throne at the time of his birth in May 2019, Archie’s position in the line of succession was quite far down.
Being a great-grandchild of the monarch did not automatically grant him the title of prince since he was not the firstborn son of a future king.
It is worth noting that the Queen had shared precious moments with Archie and Lilibet just a few months before her passing, as revealed by their father in a touching tribute to the late monarch.
The delay in deciding their titles raises questions about the future of Archie and Lily.
Could this be the end of Meghan’s alleged plot against the Royals?
Only time will tell.
