Prince Harry, once third in line to the throne, now finds himself in fifth position, trailing behind his brother Prince William and his children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
The release of his tell-all memoir, titled “Spare,” earlier this month has stirred controversy and raised questions about whether he should retain his place in the line of succession.
In his memoir, Harry sheds light on the tensions between himself and the royal family, leading to renewed calls for him and his wife Meghan Markle to be stripped of their royal titles.
The couple, who stepped down from their royal duties three years ago, currently resides in California, where they are raising their two children, 3-year-old Archie and 1-year-old Lilibet, who are sixth and seventh in line to the throne respectively.
While Harry’s decision to leave the royal firm resulted in the loss of several patronages and honorary military titles, he has managed to retain his dukedom and position in the line of succession.
However, the publication of his highly anticipated memoir has reignited public debate surrounding his royal status.
Within the first week of its release, “Spare” has sold over 3.2 million copies worldwide.
A recent poll conducted from January 30th to February 8th asked readers whether Prince Harry should lose his place in the line of succession.
Out of the 27,880 respondents, a staggering 95% (26,444 people) answered yes, while only 5% (1,336 people) believed he should retain his position.
An additional 100 people claimed to be unsure.
The comments section accompanying the article was flooded with readers expressing their thoughts on Harry’s entitlement to the throne.
The overwhelming sentiment among readers was in favor of removing Harry from the line of succession.
One user, LiamPollila, stated, “Of course, he should be removed.”
A separate survey conducted by TechniquePoll for the Express revealed that 66% of the 1,624 Britons surveyed supported the removal of Harry and his children from the line of succession.
Only 18% believed they should maintain their positions, while 16% remained undecided.
However, it is important to note that King Charles does not have the authority to revoke his son’s entitlement to the throne.
To achieve this, an Act of Parliament would need to be passed.
The Crown Act 2013, which was updated a decade ago, abolished male primogeniture and ensured that a younger son could not displace an elder daughter in the line of succession.
As a result, Princess Charlotte maintains her position despite the birth of her younger brother, Prince Louis.
The question remains: Should Prince Harry and Meghan Markle relinquish their titles and reconcile with the royal family?
