King Charles has taken steps to expand the number of royals who can stand in for the monarch during official duties.
Princess Anne and Prince Edward have been proposed as new additions to the current list of councillors of state.
Currently, the councillors of state include Camilla, the Queen Consort, along with four other senior royals.
However, Prince Andrew and Prince Harry, who were previously part of this group, are no longer available as working royals.
Councillors of state are required to act as deputies when the monarch is abroad or unwell.
King Charles formally requested this change, specifying that Princess Anne, also known as the Princess Royal, and Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, be added as extra substitutes.
This request was presented to the House of Lords on Monday.
To make this possible, the Parliament introduced the Councillors of State Bill, which was fast-tracked and presented to peers on Tuesday.
The purpose of this legislation is to address a constitutional dilemma regarding who can deputize for the King if he is unable to fulfill his duties as head of state.
Currently, two out of the five eligible individuals are effectively disqualified.
Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, withdrew from royal duties following his association with U.S. s** offender Jeffrey Epstein.
On the other hand, Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, now resides in the United States with his family and has stepped back from his role as a working royal.
Labour peer Scott Stansgate raised concerns about Andrew and Harry’s ability to deputize in the House of Lords.
He questioned how they could fulfill this role when one has retired from public life and the other has left the country.
Royal expert Angela Levin acknowledged that the decision to appoint Princess Anne and Prince Edward as deputies might anger Prince Harry.
However, she emphasized that there is a valid reason for this change and praised it as a sensible move.
The news of King Charles proposing new substitutes for official duties has sparked speculation about the future of Prince Andrew and Prince Harry.
Will they ever be able to return to their roles within the royal family, or is it game over for them?
