Former actress Meghan Markle, who married Prince Harry and subsequently left the royal family, had an unfortunate experience at the 2024 Golden Globes.
The Duchess of Sussex, with hopes of reviving her Hollywood career through her Netflix deal, was snubbed by the streaming giant’s CEO, Ted Sarandos.
During the event, host Joe Coy made a joke at Meghan’s expense, and Sarandos couldn’t help but laugh along.
Coy, a Filipino-American comedian who took over hosting duties from Ricky Gervais, held nothing back in his monologue.
He poked fun at various subjects, including Oppenheimer’s running time and Barry Cowan’s genitalia.
However, his most cutting joke targeted Harry and Meghan, who were absent from the ceremony.
“It turns out Harry and Meghan Markle were still getting paid millions of dollars for doing absolutely nothing, and that’s just by Netflix,” Coy quipped, eliciting laughter from the crowd.
The camera zoomed in on Sarandos, who chuckled and applauded the joke.
The joke referred to the Netflix documentary, “Harry and Meghan,” released in December 2022 to mixed reviews.
In the documentary, the couple discussed their decision to step back as working members of the royal family.
This documentary was part of a lucrative $100 million deal the couple signed with Netflix in 2020, which aimed to produce and star in various projects.
Unfortunately, the deal has not yielded the success the couple had anticipated, as their popularity has plummeted over the past year.
Their podcast, “Archetypes,” also part of a multi-million dollar deal with Spotify, was canceled after just one season.
Spotify’s head of podcast innovation and monetization, Bill Simmons, even referred to the couple as “grifters.”
Additionally, their charity, Archule, named after their son Archie, experienced a significant drop in donations, losing nearly $14 million in a year.
The public’s interest in their philanthropic efforts waned.
To compound matters, Meghan was excluded from a “Suits” reunion that took place at the Golden Globes.
The cast of the legal drama, which brought Meghan fame before she met Harry, gathered for a photo-op backstage, but Meghan was noticeably absent.
Her former co-stars, including Patrick J. Adams, Gabriel Mockt, Sarah Rafferty, Gina Torres, and Rick Hoffman, posed together, demonstrating their enduring friendship.
A source close to the cast revealed that Meghan had been invited to join the reunion but declined, citing scheduling conflicts.
The source also divulged that Meghan was not eager to face her former colleagues, who felt mistreated after she became a royal.
While Meghan had previously been friendly and professional with the cast and crew, her engagement to Harry seemed to change her demeanor.
She became distant, aloof, and stopped returning calls and messages.
Her behavior left her former colleagues feeling hurt and betrayed.
The source added that Meghan’s absence did not affect the cast much, as they had a fantastic time without her.
They have moved on with their lives and careers, harboring no desire to engage with her drama.
While they are happy for her success, they want nothing to do with her.
Meghan’s representatives did not respond to requests for comment.
Reportedly, the Duchess of Sussex is currently working on a new project for Netflix, a biopic about her life.
She hopes this endeavor will restore her image and reputation.
However, insiders claim that the project is facing delays and difficulties.
Meghan is struggling to find a director and a star willing to collaborate with her.
