Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s attempt to mingle with the Hollywood elite at the Bob Marley One Love movie premiere in Jamaica didn’t quite go as planned.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex made a surprise appearance at the Carib Theatre in Kingston on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, hoping to network with the top brass of the entertainment industry.
However, their aspirations were met with coldness and hostility, resulting in their expulsion from the event by security.
The couple’s hopes of rubbing shoulders with Hollywood bigwigs were dashed when Paramount CEO, Brian Robbins, snubbed them and refused to invite them to the premiere.
Robbins, attending the event with his wife Tracey James, reportedly did not want Harry and Meghan associated with his company or his movie.
He was furious with the couple for their controversial Netflix deal, which he saw as direct competition and a threat to his business.
Additionally, he took offense at their decision to quit their royal duties and pursue lucrative media deals in the US.
Robbins, a close friend and business partner of Tom Cruise, the Mission Impossible star and devout Scientologist, allegedly instructed his security team to escort Harry and Meghan out of the red carpet and prevent them from entering the theatre.
He also advised his staff and guests to ignore the couple, refraining from posing for photos or engaging in conversation with them.
Unaware of Robbins’ animosity towards them, Harry and Meghan found themselves shocked and embarrassed by the ordeal.
Despite attempting to act casual and friendly, they were met with silence and indifference from other celebrities and dignitaries attending the premiere.
Some Jamaican people even booed and heckled them, accusing the couple of disrespecting Jamaican culture and the legacy of Bob Marley, the legendary singer and songwriter widely regarded as the father of reggae music.
Facing backlash from the British public and the royal family for their decision to leave their royal duties and move to the US, Harry and Meghan felt devastated and humiliated by the incident.
They blamed themselves for not conducting thorough research and preparation before attending the premiere, failing to grasp the political and social dynamics of Jamaican society.
Doubts began to creep in, questioning whether their departure from the royal family had been a mistake and if they had lost credibility and respect in the eyes of the world.
The red carpet humiliation of Harry and Meghan sparked a fiery debate on social media.
Some expressed sympathy and support for the couple, praising their courage and resilience while defending them against accusations of selfishness and irresponsibility.
These individuals believed that Harry and Meghan had traveled to Jamaica to support a worthy cause and honor Bob Marley’s legacy.
Conversely, others criticized the couple for their recklessness and ignorance, arguing that their expulsion was well-deserved.
They accused Harry and Meghan of insensitivity and disrespect towards the Jamaican people and their culture, particularly for attending the premiere with the anti-royal Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness, effectively snubbing the king, who is Harry’s father.
Harry and Meghan have chosen to remain silent about their red carpet humiliation, refraining from commenting on social media since the premiere.
After spending a few days in Jamaica, they are expected to return to their California home soon.
The movie, “Bob Marley, One Love,” features Kingsley Benatar as the legendary singer and Lashana Lynch as his wife Rita.
It is scheduled for release on February 14, 2020.
