Meghan Markle’s contract with talent agency WME has been canceled after French fashion giant Dior denied any negotiations or recent contact with the Duchess of Sussex.
Speculation had been swirling in Hollywood that Markle was set to sign a lucrative deal with Dior, potentially earning her a staggering $20 million over three years.
However, it seems the reports were unfounded, and Dior made it clear that they have not been in contact with Markle.
It appears that Markle may have jumped the gun by assuming the deal was a done deal.
This misstep is a prime example of how she often derails her own plans.
As a working royal, Markle would not have been able to accept money or become a brand ambassador, as senior royals are not allowed to collaborate with specific designers.
However, unofficially endorsing a brand through personal style choices can still provide great PR for companies, as seen with Princess Kate’s frequent choice of Alexander McQueen.
This tradition of royal fashion influence extends beyond the UK.
In Monaco, for example, Charlotte Casigary, the niece of Prince Albert and 11th in line to the throne, has acted as the face of Gucci’s cosmetics line.
While senior royals cannot directly profit from such endorsements, their extended family members can use their royal connection to generate additional income as legitimate brand ambassadors.
These rumors about Markle’s potential partnership with Dior come on the heels of criticism from a Spotify executive who referred to her and Prince Harry as “grifters” following the premature end of their $25 million deal with the streaming giant.
The couple’s podcast, Archewell, failed to produce enough content, delivering only about 13 hours over three years.
As a result, Spotify decided to terminate the contract, citing a mutual agreement between the two parties.
It is worth noting that as a working royal, Markle’s options for outside income were limited.
While she has been regarded as a fashion influencer for years, she could not officially become a brand ambassador or receive payment for promoting a label.
This restriction is in line with the protocol followed by other senior royals.
The cancellation of Markle’s contract with WME and the debunking of the Dior partnership rumors highlight the challenges she faces in navigating her post-royal life.
Despite her aspirations, it seems that Markle may have to reassess her approach and find alternative avenues to achieve her goals.
