Prince Harry’s recent memoir, titled “Spare,” has caused quite a stir as he made shocking allegations against the royal family, shedding light on his life within the firm and his decision to step back from royal duties three years ago.
Although he and his wife, Meghan Markle, gave up their HRH status when they announced their departure, they were allowed to retain their Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles.
However, according to a recent poll conducted by Express.co.uk, readers strongly believe that Harry should be stripped of his titles.
Upon their marriage in 2018, Queen Elizabeth II bestowed the Sussex dukedom upon Harry and Meghan, along with the titles Earl and Countess of Dumbarton and Baron and Baroness of Kilkeel.
However, British conservative commentator Niall Gardiner recently took to Twitter, calling for the couple to be stripped of their titles.
He argued that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle do not deserve to carry royal titles, given their perceived betrayal of the British people through their campaign against the royal family.
Gardiner further claimed that they have become the most unpopular and distrusted couple in modern British monarchy history.
Conservative MP Bob Seeley intends to introduce a private member’s bill that could potentially strip Harry and Meghan of their titles by amending the 1917 Titles Deprivation Act.
In a poll conducted by Express.co.uk, which ran from January 6th to January 17th, an overwhelming majority of the 21,583 readers who participated, 97% (20,906 people), voted in favor of stripping Harry of his titles.
Only 3% (569 people) disagreed, while 108 people remained undecided.
Numerous comments were left by readers expressing their support for revoking Harry’s titles.
One reader, using the username MagicCanary, stated, “Yes, strip all titles and privileges.”
Some readers even suggested that Harry should be removed from the line of succession.
Despite stepping back from royal duties, the Duke of Sussex currently holds the fifth position in the line of succession, following his brother Prince William and his children.
Under the 1917 letter of royal protocol, Archie and Lilibet, Harry and Meghan’s children, should be given HRH titles and entitled to be a prince and princess.
However, royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams believes that due to the allegations made by Harry against the firm, it is unlikely that their children will be granted titles.
Fitzwilliams stated, “The issue of Archie and Lily and whether they see their royal cousins and if so, when, is another imponderable in this destructive circus.
Under the protocols laid down by George V in 1917, they should automatically be given HRAs, but it is up to the new monarch.
This surely cannot happen now and not only because of a slimmed-down monarchy.”
During an interview with Anderson Cooper on CBS 60 Minutes, Harry was asked about relinquishing his dukedom, to which he replied, “What difference would that make?”
Historian David Starkey, however, believes that Harry should not be stripped of his titles, as it would only give him more attention than he deserves.
Starkey argued that Harry’s relevance is diminishing over time and that stripping him of his titles would only provide him with unnecessary attention.
It is important to note that King Charles III does not possess the power to grant or remove dukedoms.
An act of parliament must be passed to amend the law and allow for the revocation of the Sussex dukedom.
The fate of Harry’s titles ultimately rests in the hands of the legislative process.
