King Charles III has marked Prince Edward’s 59th birthday in a grand manner by conferring upon his youngest brother the prestigious title of Duke of Edinburgh.
The monarch’s gesture was announced through a statement shared on the royal family’s official website.
The statement expressed, “His Majesty the King has been pleased to confer the Dukedom of Edinburgh upon the Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex and Forfa on the occasion of His Royal Highness’s 59th birthday.”
The Duke of Edinburgh title previously belonged to Queen Elizabeth II’s husband, Prince Philip.
He assumed this title in 1947 upon marrying Her Majesty, who herself held the title of Duchess of Edinburgh until her coronation in 1952.
Prince Edward’s wife, Sophie, has now been honored with the title of Duchess of Edinburgh as well.
The statement highlighted that the couple is committed to carrying forward Prince Philip’s legacy of empowering young people from diverse backgrounds to achieve their full potential.
Following Prince Philip’s passing in April 2021 and Queen Elizabeth II’s demise in September 2022, Prince Edward actively supported his father’s endeavors, particularly the Duke of Edinburgh award.
Although the decision to bestow the Dukedom rested with King Charles III, there was an established understanding that Prince Edward would succeed Prince Philip in this role.
A statement from Buckingham Palace in 1999 mentioned that Prince Edward and Sophie would eventually be named the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, succeeding Prince Philip.
The title of Earl of Wessex has now been passed down to Prince Edward’s son, James, Viscount Severn, aged 15.
The couple also has a daughter, Lady Louise Windsor, aged 19.
In light of King Charles III’s ascension to the throne, other members of the royal family have received new titles.
Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, is now known as Queen Consort Camilla, while Prince William and Kate Middleton have taken on the roles of Prince and Princess of Wales.
Furthermore, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s children have been designated as Prince Archie III and Princess Lilibet of Sussex, aged 21 months, in line with their grandfather’s reign.
Regarding the recent developments, a spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex confirmed to E!
