In a recent interview with The Cut magazine, Meghan Markle made a bold comparison between herself and Nelson Mandela, which has stirred up quite a bit of backlash.
The former Suits actress claimed that she was told by a cast member of The Lion King in 2019 that South Africans had celebrated her marriage to Prince Harry, just as they did when Mandela was released from prison.
However, Karl Stefanovic, the host of Today, wasted no time in mocking Markle’s claims during a conversation with Nine’s London correspondent Tracey Voe.
Stefanovic, who has never been one to hold back his criticisms of Meghan, expressed his incredulity at her statements.
His co-host, Alison Langdon, chimed in, calling the comparison “tone-deaf.”
In a feigned display of compassion, Stefanovic later quipped, “I think Meghan is probably a little misunderstood, don’t you reckon?”
Langdon, known for her disdain towards the Sussexes, smirked and asked, “Oh, you’re changing your tune, are you Karl?”
Stefanovic then burst into laughter, stating, “Anyone who compares themselves to Mandela, I think, is fair enough.”
Piers Morgan, a well-known critic of Markle, also took the opportunity to slam her after the interview.
He described her remarks as “revoltingly self-aggrandising, disingenuous, and hypocritical royal bashing.”
Morgan particularly took issue with the Mandela anecdote, questioning Markle’s audacity in using her royal title to criticize the institution that bestowed it upon her.
Across the pond, Americans have joined in the criticism, labeling Markle’s comments as sickening and accusing her of being out of touch with reality.
They have also condemned her for continuing to use her Duchess of Sussex title despite her apparent disdain for the royal family.
Journalist Lucy Burge from Boston voiced her frustration, asking, “If Meghan Markle hates the royal family so much, why is she still using the title?
She’s the fakest, most annoying person alive.”
Others have expressed their disbelief at Markle’s continuous negative remarks about the royal family since stepping down as a working royal.
One individual questioned, “What has Meghan Markle been doing since she left the royal family?
Every time she opens her mouth, it’s to bad-mouth them all and lie.”
Another added, “It doesn’t make sense that Megzy still uses the royal title that the Queen gave them while she keeps thrashing them every day.
Return the royal title that she hates so much and live your life in peace.”
Markle has also faced criticism for claiming that Prince Harry told her, “I lost my dad,” following his public fallout with Prince Charles over their decision to step away from royal duties.
Royal experts previously suggested that Harry had reestablished contact with his father, but his relationship with his brother, Prince William, had not fully recovered after the couple’s Oprah interview.
One person commented, “Meghan Markle has infamously rejected and demonized her own dad, Tom.
In her last vanity PR interview, she says Prince Harry told her, ‘I lost my dad too.’
That is huge.
It will cause enormous damage to Prince Charles, a king in waiting, and she knows it.
Nasty, nasty, nasty.”
Furthermore, Markle’s claims of the press attempting to take pictures of her while dropping off Archie at school were swiftly dismissed by royal reporter Richard Palmer.
He labeled her a “fantasist” and stated that such occurrences would be highly unlikely in the UK due to strict rules regarding the treatment of children and education.
Dan Wooten, a columnist for The Mail Online, echoed this sentiment, calling the lies in Markle’s interview “extraordinary.”
He pointed out that Prince William and Kate Middleton often drop their children off at school without being seen by photographers.
