In a twist of royal fate, Duchess Sophie narrowly missed out on being bestowed the title of Princess Kate, all thanks to Prince Edward’s unexpected decision.
The coveted title, previously held by her aunt, was eventually given to the now beloved Princess of Wales upon her marriage to Prince William in 2011.
However, the road to their current titles of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge was initially intended for Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie.
Despite the initial plans, the Dukedom of Cambridge eluded Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie due to a peculiar turn of events.
Following their remarriage in 1999, Prince Edward, unlike his brother Prince Andrew, did not receive a dukedom.
Instead, he assumed the title of Earl of Wessex, consequently making Sophie the Countess of Wessex.
According to insider reports from a palace courtier, Prince Edward’s preference for the Earl of Wessex title over the Dukedom of Cambridge stemmed from a rather unexpected source – a movie.
It is said that Prince Edward’s change of heart was influenced by the film “Shakespeare in Love,” wherein a character was named the Earl of Wessex.
Enamored by the regal ring of the title, he sought permission from the Queen to adopt it as his own.
