The upcoming coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla has brought the status of the Duke of York as a member of the Most Noble Order of the Garter into question.
Established by King Edward in 1348, the Order is not only the oldest British Order of Chivalry but also the world’s oldest national order of knighthood that is still active today.
Comprised of 24 knights or ladies companion, along with the King and Prince of Wales who are ex officio and supernumerary members, this prestigious Order holds great significance.
Among the members is Prince Andrew, who finds himself uncertain about his role and the appropriate attire for the crowning ceremony.
Recent reports suggest that King Charles remains undecided on what the Duke of York should wear.
According to a royal commentator, while Prince Andrew may not be adorned in luxurious robes, he will likely wear the same attire as the non-royal members of the Order of the Garter, without any special considerations.
During the coronation, it is expected to be a collar day, meaning that the outfits worn by the Order of Garter members will reflect their respective knighthoods.
However, this does not necessarily mean that all eligible royals will wear an order’s collar.
In Queen Elizabeth’s coronation, four knights of the Order of the Garter held a gold canopy over her during the anointing.
In previous coronations, kings had a similar role.
Queen Elizabeth, however, distinguished herself by not appointing any new knights to the Order of the Garter for her coronation, as her predecessors had done.
Buckingham Palace has kept the dress code for the event under wraps, leading to ongoing speculation about whether tiaras and ball gowns will be worn.
It is understood, though, that King Charles aims to present a modernizing monarchy, with guests expected to wear less formal attire compared to previous historic coronations.
As for Prince Andrew, the Duke of York has previously worn elaborate regalia to signify his position as a Knight of the Garter.
His vestments and accessories include a blue velvet mantle with a white taffeta lining, a dark red velvet hood, a surcoat two-door bonnet with a plume of white and black feathers, a pure gold collar consisting of 13 heraldic knots alternating with 13 enameled medallions, and, of course, a garter.
However, due to his tarnished reputation, there have been debates about whether he should be permitted to wear the ceremonial robes.
According to an insider who spoke to the Mirror, the Duke of York was left completely unaware of the dress code for the upcoming celebration, while other members of the royal family have already been informed of the specifics.
The source revealed that Prince Andrew is furious, feeling excluded and disrespected regarding something he believes he is entitled to.
The news of this ongoing debate has sparked discussions among the public.
