Authorities at Buckingham Palace are considering eliminating the word “consort” from Camilla’s title before King Charles III’s coronation at Westminster Abbey in May.
While there is no official confirmation from the palace, Royal Correspondent Richard Palmer believes a change is on the horizon.
Speaking on the Daily Express Royal Roundup, Palmer noted that some papers already refer to Camilla as the Queen, suggesting that the word “consort” may be dropped.
In the past, every Queen consort has been known simply as the Queen.
Over the past 17 years, attitudes towards Camilla have significantly improved.
After the death of Charles’ former wife, Princess Diana, Camilla has become a pillar of strength for the royal family, especially following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.
The decision to remove Camilla’s title depends on how well the public accepts her as Queen, according to Palmer.
He believes that since Queen Elizabeth II held the throne for 70 years, many people around the world simply regarded her as the Queen.
Previous consorts of monarchs in the United Kingdom, such as Queen Mary and Queen Alexandra, have also had their titles dropped.
Camilla is now regarded as one of the most popular members of the royal family.
Palmer suggests that removing the word “consort” is a way to create distance between the late Queen and how Camilla is described.
By the time of the coronation, she will likely be referred to as the Queen.
If the title is dropped, Camilla would be known as either the Queen or Queen Camilla, similar to other queens before her.
For instance, King George VI’s wife was initially known as Queen Elizabeth or the Queen, but later became the Queen Mother to avoid confusion with their names.
For years, there has been speculation about what Camilla would be called when Charles ascends the throne.
However, during the 70th anniversary of her reign, Queen Elizabeth expressed her desire for Camilla to be known as Queen Consort.
She thanked the nation for their loyalty and affection throughout her long reign and stated her intentions for her daughter-in-law.
The Queen’s strong support for Camilla was evident when she made the Duchess a Royal Lady of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, recognizing her contribution to the monarchy.
Many royal commentators interpreted this as a sign that Camilla would be granted the status of Queen Consort.
Attitudes towards Camilla have evolved over the past 17 years since her marriage to Charles, especially following the death of Princess Diana.
