The recent Netflix special by comedian Chris Rock has caused a stir and raised concerns about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s future association with the streaming service.
In his latest show, titled “Selective Outrage,” Rock parodied Meghan Markle’s racial assertions regarding the royal family.
This has led to speculation about the couple’s standing with Netflix.
During her interview with Oprah Winfrey, the Duchess of Sussex accused an unnamed member of the royal family of racism and expressed her feelings of isolation within the royal household.
Chris Rock’s mockery of these remarks in his Netflix special has not gone unnoticed.
Kinsey Schofield, a US-based commentator, reacted to Rock’s parody by suggesting that this would undoubtedly bother Harry and Meghan.
Netflix was supposed to be their safe haven, where they had spent years creating content and being paid handsomely for it.
However, with Rock’s criticism on their own platform and network, their relationship with Netflix is now at risk.
In late 2020, Harry and Meghan signed a multi-year contract with Netflix, and since then, they have released various content, including Meghan’s podcast Archetypes and a holiday special from two years ago, featuring inspiring stories and personal anecdotes from celebrities.
However, following the release of Chris Rock’s special, the couple has chosen to remain silent in public, as his comments have sparked controversy.
In his comedy routine, Rock ruthlessly mocked Meghan’s claims, suggesting that she was merely dealing with typical in-law problems.
He also remarked that she had won the “light-skinned lottery,” but even black people were curious about the complexion of her child.
The comedian made Meghan the target of his jokes during a segment on victimhood.
He questioned who Meghan Markle really was and referred to her as a nice lady who seemed to be complaining.
He also poked fun at her Oprah interview, claiming that some of her experiences were not solely due to racism but rather involved a few in-laws.
Rock went on to mock Meghan’s revelation that there were discussions within the royal family about how dark their son Archie’s skin might be.
During Oprah’s interview, Meghan had shared her honest answer regarding the royal family’s concerns about Archie’s title and security due to his potential skin color.
She also mentioned that there were multiple conversations on this topic but refrained from disclosing the identity of the individuals involved.
Meghan explained that Harry had relayed these discussions to her, and it was difficult to separate them as distinct conversations.
Oprah probed further, suggesting that the concern about Archie’s skin tone stemmed from worries that it might cause issues.
Meghan agreed with this assumption, stating that it was hard to understand the reasoning behind it.
Since then, Harry has denied accusations that Meghan had accused him of racism.
However, the support for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in Britain has reached a new low following their recent media exploits.
According to a survey conducted by Redfield and Wilton strategists on March 1, the couple’s popularity among Britons has further declined.
The future of Harry and Meghan’s relationship with Netflix remains uncertain.
While they had hoped for a fruitful partnership with the streaming giant, Chris Rock’s special has cast doubt on their standing.
Only time will tell how this controversy will affect their association with Netflix and their endeavors in the entertainment industry.
