Negotiations for the proposed move of the Washington Wizards and Capitals to Northern Virginia have come to an end, as announced by the city of Alexandria.
The plan, initially introduced by Governor Glenn Young in December, aimed to establish a new entertainment district featuring a sports arena and practice facility.
However, the proposal faced opposition from certain state legislators, resulting in its termination.
Mayor of Alexandria expressed disappointment over the failed deal, citing partisan conflicts as a hindrance to its evaluation based on merit.
“We are disappointed that this proposal was not able to be thoughtfully considered on its merits by legislators, stakeholders, and ultimately now by our community and instead got caught up in partisan warfare in Richmond,” stated the mayor.
Consequently, Alexandria will no longer pursue the current proposal, shifting its focus towards other initiatives aimed at enhancing commercial opportunities in the community.
The goal is to diversify the tax base and safeguard the quality of life for residents in the future.
Governor Glenn Young echoed the sentiments, attributing the collapse of the deal to personal and political interests that overshadowed the unique opportunity it presented.
Young emphasized the potential benefits of the development, claiming it could have generated 30,000 jobs and $12 billion in economic activity.
