While they are primarily known for their diligent work as senior royals, this charming couple proved that they can still find joy in each other’s company during royal outings.
In May 2014, Earl and Countess of Wessex at the time, Edward and Sophie ventured to the Roman Baths at Bath Abbey.
Sophie couldn’t resist taking a sip of the renowned healing water.
Bath, a city that dates back to 863 BC, owes its existence to the discovery of hot springs in the area.
The water was believed to possess curative properties.
As Sophie took a sip, she turned to her husband and playfully remarked, “Yummy.”
Edward, quick-witted as ever, responded with just six words, “You look a lot younger already.”
This prompted an eruption of laughter from the Duchess, with fans commending Edward’s dad joke and others noting that Sophie’s expression said it all – the water tasted dreadful.
Edward and Sophie exchanged vows in June 1999 and later welcomed their children Lady Louise and James, who now holds the title of Earl of Wessex after his father.
Following the passing of Queen Elizabeth, the couple inherited the titles of Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, as per Prince Philip’s wishes.
Richard Fitzwilliams, a royal expert, shared with Express.co.uk that Sophie had a close relationship with the Queen.
Both she and Edward are involved with approximately 70 patronages, and Sophie undertakes around 200 engagements annually.
She is particularly passionate about supporting charities that aid individuals with learning disabilities, the visually impaired, and agricultural causes.
It is likely that Sophie and Edward will take on more engagements and patronages in the future, given the Queen and Prince Philip’s extensive involvement with various institutions.
Despite their youth, Louise and James have already been identified as potential key figures within the royal family.
However, for now, they are focused on completing their education.
At just 16 years old, James is still attending school and working towards his GCSEs.
Meanwhile, his older sister is in her second year at St. Andrews University, where she is studying English literature.
Interestingly, St. Andrews is also where Prince William and Princess Kate pursued their education and where their love story first blossomed, as depicted in the final season of The Crown.
In conclusion, the delightful banter between Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie during their visit to Bath showcased their enduring bond and sense of humor.
