British officials have received formal notification from the Duke of Sussex that he now considers the United States his primary place of residence.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex made a significant move in 2020, transitioning from Windsor, England to Montecito, California, just months after stepping down from their roles as senior working royals.
Last week, the Duke of Sussex finalized his move to his main residence in the U.S., marking a clear shift from their previous abode in the UK.
After departing the United Kingdom three years ago, the Duke of Sussex and his family were asked to vacate Frogmore Cottage in 2023 by his father.
This move solidified their relocation to the U.S., which officially commenced when they left the cottage back in June last year.
Despite this change, experts have noted that the Duke’s application did not reference a permanent residence, suggesting a lack of possession of a green card, a crucial step towards naturalization and obtaining U.S. citizenship.
According to immigration specialist Charlotte Slocombe from Fragomen, residency in the U.S. encompasses various visa categories, signifying that the Duke is not merely a tourist.
However, the absence of the term “permanent residence” casts doubt on his possession of a green card, an essential requirement for pursuing U.S. citizenship.
Nevertheless, the Duke can maintain his temporary immigration status indefinitely through alternative visas like the A-1 diplomatic visa or the O-1 extraordinary ability visa, without the need for permanent residency or citizenship.
Royal expert Tom Quinn revealed in an exclusive interview with the Mirror that the Duke of Sussex was deeply upset and felt unjustly treated when forced to leave Frogmore.
He believed his father’s decision was driven by spite rather than necessity, expressing anger and sadness over the eviction.
Quinn further explained that the Duke struggled to accept the consequences of resigning as a working royal, viewing the loss of his royal residence as a personal rejection reminiscent of his parents’ tumultuous divorce.
In reflecting on his past experiences, the Duke of Sussex saw parallels between his current situation and the emotional turmoil he endured during his parents’ divorce.
The removal from Frogmore Palace stirred up painful memories, evoking feelings of abandonment and rejection.
Despite the challenges he faced, the Duke remains determined to navigate his new life in the U.S. with resilience and optimism.
As the Duke of Sussex settles into his new home in California, the transition signifies a fresh chapter in his journey towards independence and self-discovery.
