Rumors have been swirling that the Duke of Sussex believed reaching out to King Charles would pave the way for healing and forgiveness between them.
However, according to royal expert Tom Quinn, this well-intentioned plan has gone awry.
Rather than engaging in dialogue, the King has chosen to remain silent, further straining their already fragile relationship.
Since stepping back from royal duties in 2020, the Sussexes have not held back in voicing their criticisms of the British royal family.
Their grievances have been aired through various channels, including interviews, memoirs, and documentaries.
This public airing of discontent has significantly damaged their ties with the monarchy, particularly with the King, who is reportedly so upset that he has cut off all communication with his son.
Despite the Duke’s efforts to bridge the gap, the situation seems to have deteriorated even further.
His belief that his father would eventually come around and forgive him appears to be a fading hope.
Quinn suggests that the Duke felt justified in his critiques, thinking they would prompt the King to apologize for the pain caused.
The tension escalates with the Duke’s wife, Meghan Markle, who is said to have plans for another revealing book, using her husband’s experiences as material.
The King is reportedly appalled by this prospect and expects an apology from the Duke for any distress caused.
Yet, the Sussexes maintain that it is the Queen and the monarchy who owe them an apology for perceived unfair treatment.
After the release of his memoir “Spare” in 2023, the Duke hinted at having enough content for two additional books, revealing that much had to be left out of his original narrative.
This admission has only fueled the King’s frustration, though he has opted to refrain from publicly confronting his son despite the ongoing attacks on the royal family.
Quinn notes that the King’s silence has reached a point where he is ignoring his son’s attempts to reach out.
Earlier this year, the Duke made a trip to London with the hope of reconciling, especially as his father faced health challenges.
He expressed to Good Morning America that illness often brings families closer together.
However, despite being in London for the Invictus Games’ 10th anniversary, the Duke was unable to meet with his father.
This missed opportunity only adds to the sense of despair surrounding their relationship.
