Prince George experienced the heartache of supporting the England national football team as they fell short in the Euro 2020 final.
The highly-anticipated match between England and Italy ended in a tense 1-1 draw after 120 minutes of play, forcing the game to be settled through a nerve-wracking penalty shootout.
The seven-year-old prince looked devastated as he witnessed Gareth Southgate’s heroes come agonizingly close to securing their first major trophy in 55 years.
In the aftermath of the final whistle, Prince George’s father, Prince William, took to Twitter to express his emotions, simply stating, “heartbreaking.”
He also extended his congratulations to the Italian team, known as Azuri, for their great victory.
Despite the disappointment, Prince William commended the English team for their remarkable journey, urging them to hold their heads high and be proud of themselves, while expressing his belief in their future success.
At the beginning of the match, it seemed that England had a promising chance at victory when Luke Shaw scored a goal just two minutes into the game.
The ecstatic Prince George erupted with joy as he witnessed the wing-back put his team in the lead.
Interestingly, Prince George was once again dressed in a suit for the occasion, as there was reportedly a difference of opinion between Prince William and Kate Middleton regarding whether he should wear an England shirt.
Ultimately, it was decided that he would don a suit, mirroring his father’s attire.
Among the 60,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium were members of the Royal Family, eagerly anticipating England’s first major final in 55 years.
Prior to the match, there was speculation about whether Prince George would wear a replica England shirt or follow in his father’s sartorial choices.
Tennis star Marion Bartoli revealed that Prince William favored the idea of Prince George wearing a replica shirt, while Kate Middleton had reservations.
Bartoli shared her conversation with Kate during a BBC Radio 5 Live interview, stating that it was a topic of discussion during their afternoon tea.
The final decision, however, remains unknown.
In addition to attending the football match, Kate Middleton had a busy day, also witnessing Novak Djokovic’s victory in the Wimbledon men’s singles final.
Meanwhile, Prince William, who serves as the president of the Football Association, sent a message of support to Gareth Southgate’s squad before the game.
