Comedian Jim Gaffigan caused quite a stir at the 2024 Golden Globe Awards with his scathing remarks about Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex.
Markle, who has been embroiled in controversy since her explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey last year, became the target of Gaffigan’s jokes as he presented the award for Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television.
Gaffigan wasted no time in addressing the sensitive issues surrounding Meghan’s claims of racism and mistreatment within the royal family.
With a touch of self-deprecating humor, he began by saying, “I can’t believe I’m in the entertainment industry.
I can’t.
You know, it’s so unlikely.
I’m from a small town in Indiana.
I’m not a pedophile.”
However, he swiftly shifted the focus to Meghan, stating, “But enough about me.
Let’s talk about the nominees.
They are all so talented and funny.
Unlike some people who think they are funny but are really just whiny and entitled.
You know who I’m talking about.
Meghan Markle.”
The audience gasped and groaned in response as Gaffigan continued his roast, making it clear that he believed Meghan was not welcome at the event.
He playfully mocked her mixed heritage, saying, “Oh, come on.
You know she’s not welcome here.
She’s not one of us.
She’s not even American.
She’s Canadian.
Or British.
Or whatever.
She can’t make up her mind.”
Gaffigan then referred to the infamous Oprah interview, where Meghan and Prince Harry accused an unnamed member of the royal family of expressing concerns about their son Archie’s skin color.
Gaffigan quipped, “Well, maybe they were just curious.
Maybe they wanted to know if he would need sunscreen.
Or maybe they were worried he would look like his grandfather, Prince Charles.
He’s pretty dark.
Have you seen him?
He’s like a burnt toast.”
The comedian didn’t stop there; he also took aim at Meghan’s lawsuit against the Mail on Sunday, which she won last month on the grounds of privacy and copyright infringement.
Gaffigan sarcastically questioned the use of writing a letter, saying, “She sued a newspaper for printing a letter she wrote to her dad.
A letter.
Who writes letters anymore?
What is this, the 1800s?
Did she also send him a telegram and a carrier pigeon?”
He further suggested that Meghan was contradictory in her actions, complaining about her privacy being invaded while simultaneously revealing her personal life to the public.
Gaffigan remarked, “She said she wanted to be left alone, but then she went on TV and told the whole world her sob story.
She said she was suicidal, but then she moved to Hollywood and signed a deal with Netflix.
She said she loved her husband, but then she made him give up his family and his country.
She said she was a feminist, but then she married a prince.
She’s full of contradictions.
And lies.”
In a final blow, Gaffigan expressed his hope that Meghan would not win any awards and even suggested that she should be deported.
He declared, “She doesn’t deserve any recognition or respect.
She’s a disgrace to the royal family, to the entertainment industry, and to humanity.
She should go back to where she came from.
And I don’t mean Canada or Britain.
I mean hell.”
As expected, Gaffigan’s remarks received a mixed reaction from both the live audience and viewers at home.
