In the aftermath of the Queen’s funeral, Karl Stefanovic, host of the Today show, took a jab at Meghan Markle, expressing doubt over her tearful appearance during the somber service.
Stefanovic baselessly suggested that Meghan may not have been genuinely crying as she was seen wiping away tears.
His verdict on her public display of emotion was summed up in just one word – apparently.
This comment did not go unnoticed by his co-anchor, Alison Langdon.
The incident took place while Stefanovic and Langdon were interviewing royal photographer Chris Jackson outside Buckingham Palace at around 9:20 pm local time, or 6:20 am on Tuesday in eastern Australia.
Stefanovic pointed out that several photos from the funeral could be open to interpretation, particularly regarding whether certain members of the royal family were genuinely shedding tears.
He insinuated that the pictures of Meghan wiping away tears might have been misleading.
“There have been lots of photos around and interpretations of photos and reading into photo meanings that may or may not be true,” Stefanovic remarked.
“There’s a couple of Meghan, erm, with a tear running down her face, apparently, and also even one of Princess Charlotte that everyone was saying she was crying, and we don’t know if it was true or not.”
As Stefanovic cast doubt on Meghan’s tearful display with the word apparently, Langdon smiled nervously and exchanged a knowing look with him.
Meghan was seen weeping as she watched Queen Elizabeth II’s coffin being carried out of Westminster Abbey in London on Monday.
The emotional moment unfolded during a remarkable funeral attended by dignitaries from across the world.
Meghan stood alongside Camilla Queen Consort, Catherine Princess of Wales, and her children Prince George and Princess Charlotte.
Following the circulation of these photos and reports, online trolls emphasized Meghan’s background as an actress, suggesting that she could easily fake emotions on cue.
They questioned whether anyone should believe that she was genuinely affected by anything related to Harry’s family.
Body language expert Adrian Carter of The Face Whisperer expressed skepticism, wondering if Meghan’s tears were genuine or if they were merely crocodile tears.
He noted the absence of significant muscle movement in Meghan’s face, which would typically accompany genuine emotional expressions.
However, he also considered the possibility that Meghan may have been tightly controlling her emotions.
In an interview with The Examiner on July 13th, 2017, Meghan Markle showcased her ability to cry on command.
When asked if she could make herself cry, Meghan responded enthusiastically, saying, “Oh, I can do that so well.
Oh my god, it’s crazy.
They’re like Meghan, one tear left eye go.”
She even revealed that she could shed the first tear within three seconds.
Although this sheds light on Meghan’s acting skills, it does not definitively prove that her tears at the funeral were insincere.
On the other hand, Sophie Wessex, the Queen’s favored daughter-in-law, and her husband Prince Edward displayed visible emotions during the state funeral.
The Earl of Wessex and his wife appeared distraught as they watched the Queen’s coffin during the ceremony.
Sophie struggled to contain her emotions and was seen wiping away tears as she departed from the funeral service.
Lady Louise Windsor and James Viscount Severn, Sophie and Edward’s children, also attended the funeral, showcasing a maturity beyond their years as they mourned alongside their older cousins since the Queen’s passing at Balmoral in September.
