In a heartfelt address to the United Kingdom on Friday evening, King Charles III announced the passing of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8, 2022.
During his speech, the new king expressed his love for his family and acknowledged Prince William and Kate.
Notably, King Charles III bestowed upon Kate the title of Princess of Wales, making her the first to hold this title since Princess Diana.
Addressing Kate directly, King Charles III stated, “As my heir, William now assumes the Scottish titles which have meant so much to me.
He succeeds me as Duke of Cornwall and takes on the responsibilities for the Duchy of Cornwall which I have undertaken for more than five decades.
Today, I am proud to create him Prince of Wales, Tywysog Cymru, the country whose title I have been so greatly privileged to bear during so much of my life and duty.
With Catherine beside him, our new Prince and Princess of Wales will, I know, continue to inspire and lead our national conversations, helping to bring the marginal to the center ground where vital help can be given.”
While Camilla, by virtue of her marriage to Charles, held the official title of Princess of Wales, she chose not to use it due to its association with Diana.
According to the official website for the Prince of Wales, which is temporarily suspended in honor of the Queen’s death, the title of Princess of Wales is typically passed on when the existing Prince of Wales ascends to the throne.
However, it is not automatically inherited, and Charles must choose to bestow it upon Prince William and Kate.
Roy O’Nica, Royal Editor at the Sunday Times, quoted a source familiar with the matter, stating that William and Kate are focused on earning the trust and respect of the people of Wales over time.
The couple intends to approach their roles with modesty and humility, just as they have done in their previous work.
The new Princess of Wales recognizes the historical significance of her role but is also eager to forge her own path and look toward the future.
