The much-anticipated coronation of King Charles is set to take place in May, and historian and author Dr. Tessa Dunlop has shed light on the key roles that other high-profile royals will play on this momentous day.
While the event will be attended by nearly all members of the royal family, it is the Prince and Princess of Wales who will have their own significant duties.
Although it has not been officially confirmed whether Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will be present, palace officials have been instructed to assume their attendance.
The ceremony is expected to be shorter than the late Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in 1953, with a reduced guest list.
However, an aide has assured that it will still be a grand occasion filled with celebration and pageantry.
Buckingham Palace has stated that the coronation will not only reflect the monarch’s current role but also look towards the future, while remaining rooted in long-standing traditions and pageantry.
Dr. Dunlop, speaking to The Mirror, provided insight into what we can expect from the royals apart from the King and Queen Consort on May 6th.
Regarding the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, it has been confirmed that they will be included in the guest list.
However, even if they accept the invitation, they will not be the center of attention at Westminster Abbey.
Dr. Dunlop explained that the question of the Sussexes’ attendance is causing much speculation.
Historical precedent does not favor their presence, as Prince Edward did not attend his brother George’s coronation in 1937 or his nieces Elizabeth’s in 1953 after his abdication.
Nevertheless, in these changed times, with a father who desires both his sons by his side, it is expected that Prince Harry will be present without the traditional cornet and robe.
Unlike Prince William, who will pay homage to his father by kneeling before him, peers of the realm will not be required to do so.
Therefore, it is unlikely that Prince Harry will have to go down on bended knee.
If Meghan attends, any coronation attire she wears will be of her own choosing, as she is not expected to adhere strictly to royal protocol.
On the other hand, Prince William and Kate will take center stage as the future King and Queen Consort.
As the heir to the throne, Prince William will kneel before his father, pledge allegiance, touch the crown, and kiss Charles’ right cheek.
Dr. Dunlop further explained that historical precedent suggests working royals will stand out.
Princess Margaret, for example, had her own coronation gown designed by Norman Hartnell in 1953.
Similarly, the Princess of Wales and her children are likely to have a similar scenario.
As William and his offspring are next in line to the throne, the coronation will emphasize the order of precedence and succession.
The visual messaging, conveyed through costumes and carriages, will remind us of who the future King and Queen are, whether the Sussexes appreciate it or not.
