In a bid to heal the rift between them, King Charles is reportedly contemplating awarding the title of Duke of Edinburgh to his younger brother.
Sources close to the royal family have revealed that King Charles is considering a change of heart and making amends with Prince Edward by granting him the prestigious title previously held by their late father, Prince Philip.
Initially, there were reports suggesting that Princess Charlotte, who is only seven years old, was being considered as the heir apparent for the title.
However, this decision did not sit well with Prince Edward, who viewed it as a disrespectful gesture.
A source close to him disclosed to the Daily Mail that it felt like a slap in the face, especially considering Edward’s unwavering support for Charles during the Andrew Farrago scandal.
Furthermore, Edward and his wife, Sophie, believed that the title would eventually be passed down to their son, Viscount Severn, as it had been promised to them by the Queen before her passing.
Nevertheless, it appears that King Charles may have had a change of heart and is now contemplating granting the title to Prince Edward as a means of reconciling their differences.
The same source added, “Now it does look like the tide is turning.
Clearly, the King has had time to reflect on the late Queen’s wishes.”
The title Duke of Edinburgh was established in 1726 by George I for his grandson Prince Frederick.
It was subsequently passed down to George’s oldest son, who later became George III.
Queen Victoria broke with tradition in 1866 by bestowing the title on her second son, Prince Alfred, instead of making her second son Duke of York.
Finally, the title was given to Prince Philip on the eve of his marriage to Princess Elizabeth, who then became the Duchess of Edinburgh.
Following Prince Philip’s passing last year at the age of 99, the title merged with the crown when it was inherited by his eldest son, Charles, upon becoming King in September.
The question of who would succeed him as the Duke of Edinburgh has been a subject of much speculation, with Prince Edward being seen as the next in line for the title.
It remains to be seen whether King Charles will ultimately decide to award the title to Prince Edward, thereby putting an end to this royal feud.
As Prince Edward himself stated in an interview with the BBC, “It will depend on whether or not the Prince of Wales, when he becomes King, whether he’ll do that, so we’ll wait and see.”
The potential granting of the title Duke of Edinburgh to Prince Edward would undoubtedly have a significant impact on his role and future within the royal family.
It would signify a restoration of their bond and a recognition of Edward’s contributions and loyalty to his brother, King Charles.
The decision would also solidify Edward’s position within the line of succession, ensuring the continuation of the title within their branch of the royal family.
