Meghan Markle has decided to drop her plans of trademarking her podcast, Archetypes, after officially withdrawing her application to protect the name.
The Duchess of Sussex’s multi-million-pound Spotify deal was terminated earlier this year when it was announced that the Archetypes podcast would not be renewed for a second season.
While the move was described as a ‘mutual’ decision between Spotify and Archewell Audio, sources close to the £15 million deal suggest that it was dropped due to insufficient content production by Meghan and Prince Harry.
Bill Simmons, an executive at Spotify, went so far as to describe the couple as ‘f****** grifters’, a term used to refer to swindlers in American English.
Despite the end of their deal with Spotify, Archewell Audio made efforts to revive its trademark bid for the Archetypes podcast title.
However, after a 17-month battle, the application has now been withdrawn, following the rejection of the trademark by the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
Meghan’s journey to trademark the name began in March of last year, but the application was rejected in January due to the ‘likelihood of confusion’ with an existing trademark held by Project Miracle IP Holdings.
This US-based company had registered the name for various purposes, including providing online publications on topics such as nutrition, fitness, relationships, and fashion.
The Sussexes requested an extension to respond to the rejection, but during this time, Spotify announced that they would not be renewing the podcast for another season.
Despite the setback, the Archewell team filed a petition to revive the trademark application with the USPTO on July 24.
They argued that there was no likelihood of confusion and requested the withdrawal of the refusal.
However, last month, Meghan and Prince Harry decided to put an end to the battle once and for all by filing an ‘express abandonment’ of the trademark application.
The Archetypes podcast, which aired a total of 12 episodes, aimed to challenge and defy the labels that restrict women.
It featured notable guests such as Paris Hilton, Mindy Kaling, and Serena Williams.
The podcast even won the People’s Choice Award for Pop Podcast of 2022.
A representative for the Sussexes has been approached for comment on their decision to withdraw the trademark application.
