Meghan Markle, known as the Duchess of Sussex, found herself in an embarrassing and infuriating situation recently when her attempt to secure a spot on Kelly Clarkson’s renowned talk show was flatly turned down by the host.
The former actress, who has been striving to enhance her reputation and appeal in the United States, had sought assistance from her former colleague Abigail Spencer, who shares a friendship with both Meghan and Clarkson.
Despite this connection, Clarkson, a talented singer and the victor of American Idol, was unimpressed by Meghan’s request and reportedly questioned her identity, bluntly asking, “who are you?”
Clarkson, celebrated for her down-to-earth demeanor and candid interviews with celebrities and ordinary individuals, boasts a devoted fanbase and has garnered acclaim for her show, The Kelly Clarkson Show, which premiered in 2019 and has since received multiple Daytime Emmy Awards.
In addition to her hosting duties, Clarkson also serves as a coach on The Voice, earning praise for her talent, charisma, honesty, and empathy.
Meghan, who relocated to the United States alongside her husband Prince Harry and their son Archie following their withdrawal from royal duties in 2020, had aspired to make an appearance on Clarkson’s show to advocate for the couple’s various projects and initiatives.
With lucrative deals inked with Netflix and Spotify, Meghan and Harry have been actively producing content that aligns with their values, focusing on themes such as mental health, women’s empowerment, and social justice.
Furthermore, the couple established their foundation, Archwell, and welcomed their second child, daughter Lilibet, in June 2021.
However, Clarkson’s reluctance to feature the Duchess of Sussex on her show stemmed from her disapproval of Meghan and Harry’s decision to depart from the royal family and settle in the U.S. As a proud American, Clarkson took offense at Meghan’s criticisms of the country and her involvement in the 2020 presidential election, where she and Harry endorsed Joe Biden.
Clarkson, a supporter of former President Donald Trump, felt that Meghan overstepped by meddling in U.S. politics and should exhibit respect towards the nation that had embraced her family.
Despite receiving a message from Meghan via Spencer, who had previously appeared on her show in February 2024, Clarkson remained resolute in her stance.
She unequivocally dismissed Meghan’s request, expressing her lack of interest in the Duchess and her endeavors.
Clarkson’s pointed rejection left Meghan stunned and incensed, leading her to accuse Clarkson of jealousy, insecurity, ignorance, and disrespect.
Threatening legal action, Meghan vowed to boycott Clarkson’s show and music, urging her followers to join her in solidarity against the perceived slight.
News of Meghan’s rebuff and Clarkson’s snub swiftly circulated, sparking widespread controversy and backlash against the Duchess.
Critics derided Meghan for her perceived desperation, entitlement, and inability to handle rejection and critique.
Highlighting the shortcomings of Meghan and Harry’s initiatives, detractors questioned their suitability for appearing on Clarkson’s show or receiving accolades, reminding Meghan of her prior declarations regarding a desire for a quiet, private life devoid of fame or material pursuits.
