The Rose Parade, a highly esteemed and widely followed event in the United States, captivates millions of viewers each year.
It showcases magnificent floats, marching bands, equestrian units, and renowned personalities.
The Grand Marshal, an honorary position bestowed by the president of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association, is reserved for individuals who have made significant contributions to society.
For the upcoming 2024 Rose Parade, the distinguished title of Grand Marshal has been awarded to none other than Audra McDonald, a six-time Tony Award-winning actress and singer celebrated for her remarkable performances in Broadway productions like Ragtime, A Raisin in the Sun, and Porgy and Bess.
McDonald’s talent also extends to the realms of television and film, with notable roles in The Good Wife, Private Practice, and Beauty and the Beast.
Beyond her artistic prowess, she is a fervent advocate for social justice, animal welfare, and arts education.
The announcement of her appointment as Grand Marshal took place on December 1, 2023, during a joyous ceremony held in Pasadena, California.
However, not everyone is content with McDonald’s selection.
According to sources, Meghan Markle, the former actress who relocated to Montecito, California, with her husband Prince Harry and their two children in 2020 following their withdrawal from royal duties, had aspired to be the Grand Marshal of the 2024 Rose Parade.
Markle has been striving to reestablish her Hollywood career and influence.
She has inked deals with Netflix and Spotify, authored a children’s book, and made appearances at various events and interviews.
Yet, she has also been embroiled in several controversies, including her explosive tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey, lawsuits against the British media, and allegations of racism and bullying within the royal family.
Reportedly, Markle reached out to the Tournament of Roses Association expressing her desire to assume the role of Grand Marshal.
She asserted that she perfectly embodied the theme of the 2024 parade, “Dreams Come True,” highlighting her status as a role model for women, minorities, and immigrants who has surmounted numerous challenges and obstacles to achieve her aspirations.
Markle even offered a substantial donation to the association and pledged to promote the parade on her influential social media platforms.
Unfortunately for Markle, her offer was declined by the association, which opted for McDonald instead, citing the latter’s outstanding credentials and stellar reputation.
Lance Tibbett, the president of the association, praised McDonald as a true American icon who epitomizes the spirit and values of the Rose Parade.
He lauded her as an exceptional performer, a humanitarian, and a trailblazer who has inspired millions with her talent and grace.
Additionally, Tibbett commended McDonald’s relentless commitment to racial justice and her lifelong triumphs.
Reports suggest that Markle was both furious and humiliated by the rejection, feeling that McDonald had stolen her spotlight.
Allegedly, Markle contacted McDonald and accused her of jealousy and spite, accusing her of undermining Markle’s efforts to make a positive impact on the world.
