Meghan Markle, alongside her husband Prince Harry, embarked on a new venture in 2022 with the launch of their podcast, Archetypes, under their production company Archwell Audio.
The aim of the podcast was to challenge and dismantle the labels that hinder women’s progress, featuring interviews with notable figures from various fields related to women’s empowerment.
However, this endeavor quickly faced criticism and backlash from the public and the media, who accused Meghan of hypocrisy, self-indulgence, and being out of touch with reality.
Legal troubles also plagued the podcast, as Meghan attempted to trademark the word “Archetypes” for her show and related products and services.
Unfortunately, her application was rejected by the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in January 2023.
The rejection was based on the existence of a pre-existing trademark held by a US-based company called Project Miracle IP Holdings.
This company had registered “Archetypes” in 2018 for use in blogs, online publications, books, and articles primarily in the self-help genre.
The USPTO deemed Meghan’s proposed trademark too similar to the existing one, with potential to confuse consumers.
Meghan was given until April 2023 to respond to the rejection, either by addressing the concerns or abandoning her application.
However, before she could take any action, another blow hit her podcast project.
In June 2023, Spotify, the streaming platform that had signed a multi-million dollar deal with Archwell Audio in 2020, announced the termination of their partnership and the removal of the Sussexes’ podcast from its platform.
The decision was reportedly driven by poor performance, low ratings, and negative feedback from listeners and advertisers.
Spotify released a statement claiming that the separation was mutually agreed upon with Archwell Audio, while also extending well wishes for their future endeavors.
However, insiders revealed that Spotify was disappointed and frustrated with the Sussexes.
They felt that the promised quality and quantity of content had not been delivered, and that the couple had caused more trouble than benefit for the platform.
In response to Spotify’s announcement, Meghan decided to withdraw her trademark application for “Archetypes” in September 2023, effectively signaling the end of her podcast project.
The USPTO confirmed the acceptance of her withdrawal, resulting in the abandonment of her application.
This podcast fiasco highlighted Meghan’s unsuccessful attempts to establish herself as a global influencer and champion of women’s rights.
It exposed her lack of originality, creativity, and respect for intellectual property, as she sought to appropriate a word already in use by another entity.
Furthermore, it showcased her hypocrisy, as she preached about breaking stereotypes and empowering women while reinforcing negative stereotypes and alienating women with her arrogant and entitled attitude.
The failure of Meghan Markle’s podcast serves as a lesson not only for her but also for aspiring influencers who seek to follow in her footsteps.
It demonstrates that fame and fortune alone are insufficient to create a successful and meaningful podcast.
To truly make an impact, one must offer more than just a recognizable name and title.
