The Cannes Film Festival is set to honor acclaimed actor Michael Douglas for his outstanding film career.
Douglas, who won an Academy Award for his role in Wall Street, will be the guest of honor at the 76th edition of the festival, taking place from May 16 to May 27.
However, this news did not sit well with Meghan Markle, who reportedly called Douglas to request an invitation to Cannes.
It seems that Meghan had a misguided belief that Douglas would want to engage with a “second-rate actress” like herself.
Unsurprisingly, her request was met with rejection, leaving the Duchess of Sussex fuming with rage and embarrassment.
What caused this sudden change in attitude?
Well, it all started when Michael Douglas posed for a photo with a standee of Queen Elizabeth II, captioned “Our Best Wishes to Prince Harry and Meghan.”
At that time, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were still part of the royal family.
However, once they decided to step down and began making disparaging remarks about the royal family, Douglas saw through their lies and wanted nothing to do with the scandalous couple.
Despite knowing that Douglas was a staunch royalist, Meghan still had the audacity to reach out to him in hopes of furthering her Hollywood career.
Fortunately, her plea fell on deaf ears, as Douglas disregarded her foolish request and even went as far as blocking her phone number.
The Cannes Film Festival will kick off with a tribute to Michael Douglas during the opening ceremony.
Following the tribute, the opening film, Jean du Barry, a biographical drama directed by and starring Maiwen alongside Johnny Depp, will be screened.
Douglas has had a long and illustrious career in the film industry.
While he initially had minor roles in movies during the first two decades of his career, it wasn’t until the 80s that he began making a name for himself in Hollywood.
His notable films include After the Green Heart, Fatal Attraction, War of the Roses, and Wall Street, for which he won an Oscar for Best Actor.
He has also appeared in films such as Onto a Day of Rage, The Game, The President and Miss Wade, Traffic, and Not a Word.
Although Douglas experienced a slight decline in his career in the early 2000s, his role as Hank Pym in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Ant-Man franchise revitalized his status in Hollywood.
His most recent film, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, was released earlier this year.
The Cannes Film Festival has a long history of honoring exceptional actors and filmmakers.
Previous recipients of the Honorary Palme d’Or include Tom Cruise, Forrest Whitaker, Jodie Foster, Al Andalon, Agnes Varda, Jean-Paul Belmondo, and Jane Fonda.
The prestigious award was first presented to Ingmar Bergman in 1997.
Expressing his gratitude, Michael Douglas stated, “It’s Always a Breath of Fresh Air to Be a Can, For So Long a Wonderful Platform for Daring Creators, Artistic Daring and Excellence in Storytelling.”
He further added, “After more than 50 years in the business, it’s an honor to return to the quasiette to open the festival and embrace our shared global language of film.”
The Cannes Film Festival continues to be a significant event in the film industry, celebrating the art of storytelling and providing a platform for talented individuals to showcase their work.
With Michael Douglas as the guest of honor, this year’s festival promises to be a memorable one.
