Piers Morgan, former editor of the Daily Mirror from 1995 to 2004, has responded fiercely to the High Court’s ruling that Prince Harry was a victim of phone hacking by Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN).
In an unreserved statement, Morgan expressed his disagreement with the verdict.

Mr. Justice Fancourt sided with the Royal in 15 out of the 33 articles that Prince Harry claimed were the result of phone hacking or other unlawful information gathering.
Additionally, the High Court judge acknowledged evidence indicating that Morgan was aware of journalists engaging in phone hacking during his tenure as the Daily Mirror’s editor.
As part of the judge’s ruling, the Duke of Sussex has been awarded £140,600.
Addressing the press outside his London residence, Morgan stated that “a judge in the High Court in London has ruled on various cases, including Prince Harry’s claim against Mirror Group Newspapers, where I was an editor until 2004.”
He emphasized that the judgment only implicated one article published by the Daily Mirror during his entire time as editor, which may have involved some illegal information gathering.
Morgan asserted that he had no knowledge of how that specific story was obtained.
Furthermore, he highlighted that all other claims made by Prince Harry against the Daily Mirror during his leadership were dismissed.
Regarding the judge’s references to him in the judgment, Morgan reiterated his long-standing stance, stating, “I’ve never hacked a phone or instructed anyone else to do so.”
He emphasized that no concrete evidence has been presented to support these allegations.
Notably, Morgan was not called as a witness nor asked to provide a statement in the case, a fact he deemed important for people to know.
He expressed his willingness to have done so had he been requested.
Morgan further revealed that he had not been in communication with the Mirror Group’s lawyers throughout the process.
He lamented his inability to counter the false allegations that were made against him in court by old adversaries, who seemed to harbor personal grudges.
He noted that these allegations went largely unchallenged by Mirror Group counsel, which he found perplexing.
In his statement, Morgan called attention to the judge’s reliance on the evidence of Omid Scobie, an individual who had lied about him both in his new book and in court.
He also criticized the judge’s acceptance of the testimony of Alistair Campbell, another proven liar who led the country into an illegal war.
Morgan concluded his remarks by directing his focus toward Prince Harry.
In a final remark, Morgan asserted, “Prince Harry’s condemnation of media intrusion into the private lives of the royal family is only matched by his own ruthless, greedy, and hypocritical eagerness to engage in it himself.”
He pointed out that the Prince had publicly disparaged his own family, even as two highly respected senior members were nearing their deaths, all for substantial financial gain.
Morgan characterized this behavior as truly appalling.
Referring to Prince Harry’s claim that this was a good day for truth, Morgan questioned the Duke’s ability to recognize the truth, suggesting that it eludes him entirely.
He criticized the Prince for demanding accountability from the press while refusing to accept any responsibility for smearing the royal family, making unfounded accusations of racism without providing any evidence.
Morgan also accused Prince Harry and his wife of seeking to dismantle the British monarchy, vowing to continue his efforts to prevent their success.
In response to Morgan’s statement, the Duke of Sussex issued his own personal attack on the former Good Morning Britain host following the verdict.
