The Queen’s youngest son, Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, may not receive the promised title of Duke of Edinburgh.
Doubts have emerged as to whether King Charles will bestow his brother the prestigious Dukedom.
On Monday, Prince Edward visited schools, community organizations, and voluntary groups that participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award program in and around Blackpool.
During his visit, Prince Edward spent time with young individuals who were making a positive impact in their communities through volunteering.
As a trustee of the Duke of Edinburgh Award and Chairman of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, he visited both the Oracle Youth Club and Thames Primary Academy.
Pictures captured the Royal, wearing a Davy Don fleece, beaming as he engaged in conversations with the young people.
The Duke of Edinburgh Award, founded by the late Prince Philip in 1956, aims to encourage teenagers and young adults to connect with the outdoors while undertaking self-improvement exercises.
Participants must complete a series of exercises, engage in voluntary work, and embark on a final expedition.
Annually, approximately 300,000 new participants join the program, with an estimated 461,000 current participants in the UK.
Since its inception, over 6 million people have taken part in the award.
For Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh Award holds additional significance as he was promised the title from his father.
Upon his marriage to Sophie Reyes-Jones in 1999, Buckingham Palace announced that they would be granted the titles of Earl and Countess of Wessex, with Edward eventually inheriting the Duke of Edinburgh title.
A statement released by the palace at the time stated, “The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, and the Prince of Wales have also agreed that Prince Edward should be given the Dukedom of Edinburgh in due course when the present title held now by Prince Philip eventually reverts to Crown.”
Sophie Wessex later revealed that it was Prince Philip’s own wish for Edward to assume the Edinburgh Dukedom.
However, following Prince Philip’s passing in April 2021, King Charles automatically inherited the title.
When Charles ascended to the throne last September, the titles reverted back to the Crown.
The final decision on whether Prince Edward will receive the Duke of Edinburgh title now rests with the King, who has yet to make an announcement.
The question arises: Is Prince Edward a rightful candidate for the Duke of Edinburgh title?
