Prince George, the eldest child of Kate Middleton and Prince William, is expected to play an active role in his grandfather’s coronation, according to recent discussions by experts.
Dr. George Gross, a visiting research fellow in theology at King’s College London, suggests that Prince George may break with tradition and have a significant role during King Charles’ historic service.
While it is not uncommon for young children to attend coronations, it would be unprecedented to see a young royal actively participating in such an event watched by millions worldwide.
Dr.
Gross points out that having children present at the service is not a new concept, as the current king, his mother, and his grandfather all attended coronations as young individuals.
However, traditionally, family members and children would be seated in the royal box without any formal roles.
If Prince George were to be actively involved, Dr.
Gross speculates that he might serve as a page or carry a robe.
However, officials are cautious about introducing entirely new roles, as they must strike a delicate balance between including all necessary elements in the coronation and keeping the service at a reasonable length.
Unlike Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation in 1953, which lasted for three hours, King Charles’ ceremony is expected to be shorter.
Dr.
Gross also mentions that any modern adaptations to the traditional service are more likely to focus on musical choices rather than prolonging the duration.
Rumors of Prince George’s potential involvement began circulating in late February, with claims that his parents were considering his participation in the historic ceremony.
Author Tom Quinn reveals that there is an ongoing debate within the family about whether Prince George should have a formal role and expresses Kate and William’s concern about the magnitude of the event for their young son.
Although plans for the coronation procession were leaked in March, confirming the young royal’s attendance, it remains uncertain whether Prince George will have an active role.
According to The Times, Prince George and his siblings, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, are set to join their parents in a carriage procession from London Abbey to Buckingham Palace, following the newly crowned King Charles and Queen Camilla in the gold state coach.
As the world eagerly anticipates King Charles’ coronation, the balance between tradition and innovation within the royal family will be on display.
It is yet to be seen if Prince George’s potential active role will mark a significant departure from royal tradition.
