Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s charitable organization, the Archwell Foundation, has come under scrutiny for its comparatively low donations in 2021.
According to leaked tax documents, the foundation only donated 25% of its income last year, while the Royal Foundation, led by Prince William and Kate Middleton, donated over 80%.
The Archwell Foundation managed to raise £10.5 million in total, with the majority of the funds coming from two wealthy donors who contributed £8.1 million and £2.4 million respectively.
In addition, a modest amount of £3,622.58 was raised from the public.
After donating £2,507,987, the foundation was left with £7,304,967.
On the other hand, the Royal Foundation, which does not rely on public fundraising and did not receive any government grants last year, raised a staggering £20.4 million.
Out of this amount, £16.4 million was donated, leaving the foundation with £4.7 million for future use.
Another point of contention is the compensation for the Archwell Foundation’s CEO, James Holt.
Despite working only one hour per week, Holt received a salary of £48,474.66, along with £3,103.88 in additional benefits, resulting in an hourly rate of £991.
Three other staff members were paid a total of £132.97.22 in salaries for the year 2021.
The Royal Foundation, which focuses on philanthropy in three key areas—supporting disadvantaged youth, aiding military veterans and their families, and promoting sustainable development—employs 36 individuals earning more than £60,000 annually.
Among them, one employee earns between £150,000 and £200,000, four earn up to £100,000, two up to £80,000, and four up to £70,000.
The Archwell Foundation was established by Prince Harry and Meghan after their split from the Royal Foundation, initially created by Prince William and Prince Harry to honor their late mother, Princess Diana, and her charitable legacy.
Archwell’s main objectives are to create a better online world, restore trust in information, and uplift communities.
The foundation collaborates with organizations such as the National Women’s Law Centre and Girls Inc.
Notably, it joined forces with the Los Angeles Service Platoon for a day of service in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.
It is also a founding member of the Responsible Technology Youth Power Fund and has introduced the NAACP Archwell Digital Civil Rights Award.
Archwell and Meghan actively engage with various charities, including Harvest Home on International Women’s Day and Smart Works, a charity that Meghan helped design a fashion collection for.
Recently, Meghan agreed to contribute a cake recipe to a charity cookbook, which is featured on the foundation’s website.
Additionally, Archwell celebrated Prince Harry’s memoir, Spare, on its news page, expressing gratitude for his courage, honesty, humor, and insight.
