Prince Harry made a surprise appearance at the Masters of Scale Summit in San Francisco on Wednesday, just hours after Meghan Markle’s latest interview was released.
The Duke of Sussex joined Alexei Robichaux, CEO of mental health and coaching firm BetterUp, to discuss the importance of therapy and mental well-being.
As the chief impact officer at BetterUp and a strong mental health advocate, Prince Harry’s presence at the event has been seen by many as a critique of the monarchy’s handling of mental health issues.
Some believe it highlights yet another failure of the institution to prioritize the well-being of its members.
Doran Weber, vice president and program director of Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, tweeted about Prince Harry’s speech, revealing that the Duke spoke about his past life in the royal family and the military.
According to Weber, Prince Harry mentioned that he had never heard of therapy or coaching while growing up in the firm or during his 10 years in the army.
However, he added, “Then the blinkers came off and his life changed.”
Criticism of Prince Harry’s speech quickly emerged among royal fans.
One individual expressed concern, stating, “Harry needs psychological help and support, not coaching.
It’s completely reckless that he continues to promote a for-profit corporate coaching scheme as a means to attain wellness.”
Others pointed out that his mother, Princess Diana, and even his father, Prince Charles, have openly discussed their experiences with therapy.
During the summit, Prince Harry also mentioned that he personally benefits from the coaching services offered by BetterUp, jokingly saying, “I have a coach.
I wish I had two.”
His advocacy for reframing mental health as a means to unlock human potential was noted by attendees, including Bonku, who reported on the event.
In addition to his speech, concerns have been raised about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s public image.
Royal commentator Richard Kaye suggested that the couple fears their portrayal may not align with their philanthropic intentions.
He emphasized the importance of public perception, particularly in light of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.
Kaye noted that the couple is highly regarded in many circles and received significant support after their interview with Oprah Winfrey.
However, he questioned how wisely they would exercise their influence, especially in relation to their partnership with Netflix and any potential documentary series.
Prince Harry’s appearance at the summit and his candid remarks about mental health have sparked conversations about the monarchy’s approach to well-being.
His advocacy for therapy and coaching as essential tools for personal growth has drawn both praise and criticism.
As the Duke continues to navigate his new life outside the royal family, his words and actions will undoubtedly shape public perception of him and Meghan Markle.
