Prince Harry’s growing detachment from the royal family is causing concern, as a former Tory minister claims he is destroying his own life.
David Mellor expressed his views after the Duke of Sussex alleged that Prince William had received a secret payment to settle a phone hacking claim.
This accusation comes at an unfortunate time for the royal establishment, as preparations for King Charles III’s coronation intensify.
Mellor, speaking on GB News, argued that Harry’s continuous attacks on the royal establishment are not only ruining his own life but also hindering his chances of being accepted back into the family.
According to Mellor, William received a settlement of approximately £1 million, which seems reasonable when considering that media mogul Rupert Murdoch has paid out hundreds of millions in similar cases.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that Harry was kept unaware of alleged unlawful information gathering by tabloid newspapers regarding the royal household.
The Duke of Sussex is currently suing newsgroup newspapers NGN over claims that his private information was unlawfully accessed by The Sun and the now-defunct News of the World.
However, NGN is seeking to have Harry’s case, along with actor Hugh Grant’s similar claim, dismissed, arguing that they were brought too late.
In response, Harry’s lawyers have stated that NGN’s application is an attempt to undermine a secret arrangement between the royal family and the newspaper group, an arrangement of which the Duke was informed in 2012.
During the hearing, David Sherborne, Harry’s representative, revealed that prior to 2012, Harry believed that only one voicemail, left by his brother Prince Charles, had been intercepted.
He assumed that the tabloid press would not dare to target his message due to the involvement of the security service.
However, there were members of the royal staff who claimed to have been hacked, yet Harry was kept out of the loop.
This legal action is just one of several that the Duke is currently pursuing.
Last month, he appeared in person at the High Royal Court for a preliminary hearing against Associated Newspaper Limited, the publisher of the Mail on Sunday.
Furthermore, Harry is expected to give evidence in a trial against tabloid publisher Mirror Group Newspapers, which is scheduled to begin next month.
The Duke is set to appear in court in June.
It remains to be seen how these legal battles will affect Prince Harry’s relationship with the royal family.
His ongoing disputes and public accusations have undoubtedly strained the already fragile ties.
As the preparations for King Charles III’s coronation gain momentum, the timing of these revelations could not have been worse.
