Speculations and predictions about the future of the British monarchy have been swirling since Prince Charles ascended the throne as the oldest person to become king in the country’s history, following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in September.
While some commentators, historians, and even fortune tellers claim that King Charles will be the last ruling monarch, others suggest that he may abdicate the throne in the coming years.
In fact, fortune teller Jemima Packington, who accurately predicted the Queen’s death, believes that Charles will hand over the reigns to Prince William in the near future.
According to a supposed insider, Angela Kelly, a high-ranking royal aide, Queen Elizabeth had gathered her family for a summit at Sandringham prior to her passing.
During this meeting, she surprised everyone with a series of edicts to be followed after her demise.
One of the most unusual commands was that her son, Prince Charles, would agree to abdicate on his 80th birthday.
The Queen recognized the potential that William and Catherine could bring to the throne and understood that Charles might not be the popular choice among the people.
Therefore, it is believed that Charles will hold on until William and Catherine’s children are older before passing the throne on to his son.
If this scenario were to unfold, Charles would only have seven years on the throne, which is just a fraction of his mother’s historic reign.
The natural progression would then lead to William, the eldest son of King Charles and the late Princess Diana, taking on the role he has been preparing for his entire life.
As the Prince of Wales, William underwent years of training to ensure the continuity of the British monarchy.
However, he will have to wait until Charles reaches his 80th birthday, when William himself will be 47 years old, to assume the full responsibilities of the crown.
Many argue that Britain needs a young and vibrant monarch for the 21st century, and that Charles, with his indecisiveness and weak demeanor, is not the ideal candidate.
Retiring would be the best option for everyone involved, as Charles appears unwell and tired.
Taking on the immense responsibility of ruling a nation is no small feat, and perhaps this is reason enough for Charles to consider passing down the throne rather than ruling until his own death.
Additionally, the demands of being king would require extensive travel, such as the six-month tour of the Commonwealth that Queen Elizabeth embarked on after her succession.
Even under normal circumstances, such trips can be challenging.
Considering the current pandemic, they would be even more perilous.
But beyond convenience, the question remains: how likely is it that Charles would willingly give up his crown to his son before his time?
Royal scholar Dr. Robert Morris of University College London believes that Charles should consider the option.
While he hopes that the king has inherited the extraordinary genes that allowed his grandmother to live beyond a century, and his parents to reach their 90s, he notes that Charles appears more tired and spaced out than any of them did during their coronations.
On the other hand, Prince William has been performing his duties flawlessly, and his wife exudes the qualities of a future queen.
It begs the question of when the next coronation will take place.
Royal expert Jenny Murray suggests that King Charles and the queen should make a decision in the near future to pass the sword down to Prince William.
Charles has already delivered well-received speeches, connected with crowds during his walkabouts, and seen a dramatic increase in his approval ratings since becoming king.
