Princess Anne has reportedly been reinstated as a counselor of state to her older brother, King Charles, following his recent request.
This role was previously held by the Princess Royal during Queen Elizabeth’s reign, before she was pushed down the line of succession.
The news comes as Meghan Markle opens up about the reason behind her choice of colors during her time as a royal.
In recent years, Princess Anne has been known as the hardest working member of the royal family, taking on numerous engagements and visits.
Her invaluable contributions have now led to the restoration of her prestigious role.
Reports suggest that the bill appointing Princess Anne and Prince Edward as additional counselors of state received royal assent on December 6th, 2022, signifying the King’s respect for his sister.
Prior to this request, the appointment of four counselors of state was determined by the royal line of succession.
According to the official royal family website, these counselors include the monarch’s spouse, in this case, Camilla, the Queen Consort, and the first four royals in line to the British throne who are over 21 years old.
These individuals are Prince William, Prince Harry, Prince Andrew, and Princess Beatrice, all of whom continue to serve as counselors to King Charles.
During her younger years, Princess Anne held the role of counselor of state to her late mother, the Queen.
However, with the arrival of new members in the royal family, she was pushed further down the line of succession.
Currently, Princess Anne occupies the 16th position.
This is due to the law at the time of her birth, which prioritized male heirs over female heirs.
Prince Edward, her younger brother, also served as a counselor of state to Queen Elizabeth before falling outside the first four adult roles in the line of succession.
The restoration of Princess Anne and Prince Edward to the prestigious role of counselor of state was acknowledged by King Charles in a message read out in the House of Lords.
This move, if approved by Parliament, would be significant as it increases the number of individuals who may be called upon to act as counselors of state under the terms of the Regency Acts from 1937 to 1953.
King Charles’ decision to appoint his siblings alongside the existing counselors of state demonstrates his trust in their ability to support him during his reign.
The role of counselors of state holds great importance, as they are authorized to carry out a majority of the sovereign’s official duties.
This includes signing important documents, attending privy council meetings, and receiving credentials of new ambassadors to the UK.
They are appointed to act on behalf of the monarch if he is temporarily unable to fulfill his duties due to circumstances such as illness or being abroad.
The appointment of Princess Anne and Prince Edward as counselors of state raises questions about the future role of Prince Harry and Meghan.
Does this promotion indirectly imply that there is no possibility of their return to royal duties?
