Princess Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, made a poignant choice when she attended Queen Elizabeth’s funeral on Monday.
She wore the late monarch’s Japanese Pearl Choker Necklace, a piece she had previously worn to Prince Philip’s funeral in 2021.
This exquisite necklace, according to jewellery expert Leslie Field, is made from pearls that were part of the Queen’s collection.
It is believed that these pearls were a gift from the Japanese government, possibly obtained during the Queen’s state visit to Japan in the 1970s.
The necklace was skillfully crafted by Geroude, and Field speculates that its clasp is designed to accommodate an additional strand of pearls.
One notable historical moment involving this choker took place in November 1982 when the Queen loaned it to Princess Diana for a state visit from Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands.
Diana wore the choker during a banquet at Hampton Court Palace, pairing it with Queen Mary’s lover’s knot tiara and a magnificent sapphire brooch gifted to her by the Queen Mother on her wedding day.
In November 2017, Kate also chose to wear this iconic piece for a party celebrating the diamond wedding anniversary of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.
And most recently, she adorned it once again for the funeral of the Duke of Edinburgh in April 2021.
In addition to the Japanese Pearl Choker Necklace, the Princess of Wales also selected the Bahrain Powell drop earrings for the occasion.
These earrings, which were also owned by the late Queen, were given to her as a wedding present in 1947.
Shortly after the royal wedding, two of the Bahraini Powells were repurposed to create a new pair of earrings.
These stunning earrings feature round diamond studs, from which hang round and baguette-cut diamonds arranged in a style typical of the late 1940s.
The Powells serve as elegant drops on the earrings.
