Princess Charlotte, the second child of Prince William and third in line to the throne, may be bestowed with the title of Duchess of Edinburgh as a fitting tribute to her great-grandmother, the Queen.
According to a royal insider, King Charles III intends to honor the line of succession by granting Charlotte the prestigious title once held by the Queen herself.
Speculation arose after it was revealed that King Charles had not appointed his younger brother, Prince Edward, as the Duke of Edinburgh following the passing of Prince Philip last year.
The decision was reportedly made to reserve the title for seven-year-old Charlotte.
Discussions are currently underway, with the favored outcome being the bestowal of the Duchess of Edinburgh title upon Princess Charlotte.
Not only would this serve as a poignant way to remember the Queen, who previously held the title, but it would also allow His Majesty to honor the line of succession.
The significance of this potential appointment lies in the fact that when Catherine, Princess of Wales, was expecting her first child, George, rules regarding the line of succession were altered to grant equal rights to both male and female heirs.
As a result, Charlotte’s position in the line of succession remained unaffected by the birth of her younger brother, Prince Louis.
Constitutionally speaking, it holds great importance that Charlotte should receive the title of Duchess of Edinburgh.
This title was previously held by the late Queen Elizabeth, who acquired it upon marrying Prince Philip in 1947 and retained it until her ascension to the throne.
In the future, when Prince William assumes the throne, it is possible that Charlotte may be granted the title of the Princess Royal, a designation currently held by Princess Anne.
The Royal Family’s social media accounts shared a post in August 2020, during Princess Anne’s birthday celebration, which shed light on the specific rules surrounding the title.
It stated, “Her Royal Highness the Princess was named the Princess Royal, a title traditionally bestowed upon the eldest daughter of the Sovereign, in 1987.”
