Princess Charlotte, the only daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, may soon be known by a different name, according to a royal expert.
Born in 2013, she was baptized as Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana of Cambridge, but is commonly referred to as Princess Charlotte or even Mignonette, Prince William’s affectionate nickname for her.
However, it is believed that her name could change permanently in the future, but only if another member of the royal family relinquishes their title.
When Princess Anne, the current Princess Royal, passes away, Charlotte is expected to inherit the prestigious title.
As a result, she will no longer be referred to by her birth name at formal events, but instead by her late grand-aunt’s title.
Despite this potential change, royal expert Marlene Koenig assures that Charlotte will not be pushed down the line of succession.
At seven years old, she currently holds the third position in line to the throne, ahead of her younger brother Prince Louis, and this will remain the case even if she has additional siblings.
Ms. Koenig spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk, affirming that Charlotte will always maintain her place in the line of succession, regardless of the gender-equal rules that apply to other members of the royal family.
Speculation has also arisen regarding whether Prince William, upon assuming the throne, will bestow the title of Princess Royal on his daughter, a title currently held by Princess Anne.
However, Ms. Koenig believes this is unlikely, especially considering the possibility that Louis may eventually receive a dukedom title.
Charlotte’s higher position in the line of succession solidifies her status above her younger brother.
As it stands, Prince George, Charlotte’s elder brother, is second in line to the throne, with their father, Prince William, next in line.
Following the three Wales children, Prince Harry holds the fifth position, despite no longer being a working member of the royal family.
He is then followed by his two children, Archie and Lilibet.
It is expected that both Charlotte and George will attend King Charles’ coronation in May 2023.
In recent months, the young royals have been present at various royal events, including the late Queen’s state funeral.
