Princess Charlotte, the daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, is turning six on Sunday.
However, this year, royal fans may not see the usual birthday photo shared by the couple’s communications teams.
Prince William, as the President of the Football Association (FA), has announced his participation in a social media boycott over the weekend to take a stand against racism and online abuse.
In a tweet, Prince William expressed his support for the football community, stating, “As President of the FA, I join the entire football community in the social media boycott this weekend.”
The sporting world initiated a four-day blackout on their channels starting Friday afternoon, with numerous players, clubs, and broadcasters uniting to condemn online abuse.
As a result of this boycott, it is unlikely that any mention of Princess Charlotte’s birthday will be made on the official Twitter and Instagram accounts of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge this weekend.
Normally, Kensington Palace would mark such special occasions by sharing at least one photo on social media, as they did for Prince Louis’ birthday on April 23rd.
Earlier this week, Prince William and Kate surprised their fans by releasing a never-before-seen home video captured by filmmaker Wawa.
The video was a tribute to their 10th wedding anniversary, and in their caption, they expressed gratitude for the support they have received as a family over the past decade.
This is not the first time Prince William has used his platform to address issues of racism and online abuse.
In January, he posted an anti-racist message on Twitter following instances of racial abuse targeting football players after their matches.
The Duke strongly condemned such behavior, stating, “Racist abuse, whether on the pitch, in the stands, or on social media, is despicable, and it must stop now.”
He emphasized the responsibility shared by all individuals to create an environment where such abuse is not tolerated.
Prince William also commended players, supporters, clubs, and organizations who actively speak out against and condemn this type of abuse.
The social media boycott serves as a reminder that online platforms have a crucial role in addressing and preventing hate speech and discrimination.
By joining this initiative, Prince William demonstrates his commitment to combating racism and abuse in the digital realm.
