Princess Charlotte, the second child of Prince William and Kate Middleton, holds an important position in the line of succession within the royal family.
As the first female royal to benefit from a change in the rules of succession made by her great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, in the 2010s, the seven-year-old princess is third in line to the throne, following her father and older brother, Prince George.
In 2011, Queen Elizabeth granted royal assent to the Succession to the Crown Act, which ensured that both sons and daughters of future UK monarchs would have an equal right to the throne.
This modernization of the rules eliminated the previous practice of passing over women in favor of male heirs.
Queen Elizabeth herself ascended to the throne because her father had no sons, but if he had, she would have been skipped over.
Thanks to the Crown Act, Princess Charlotte’s position in the line of succession is secure.
If, for any reason, Prince George is unable to take the throne in the future, Princess Charlotte would be next in line, rather than being passed over in favor of her younger brother, Prince Louis.
As Princess Charlotte grows older, she may be bestowed with notable titles and privileges as a senior member of the royal family.
However, there is one title that she cannot assume until a specific event occurs.
The title of Princess Royal, which is purely honorary, is the highest honor given to a female member of the royal family, falling just below the Queen Regnant.
Currently held by Princess Anne, it is a title that remains for life.
Traditionally, the title of Princess Royal is bestowed upon the eldest daughter of the monarch.
Duncan Larcombe, a royal expert and author, explains that Princess Charlotte will have to wait until the passing of Princess Anne before she can assume the title.
The decision of when and if Princess Charlotte will receive this honor lies with her father, Prince William.
It is worth noting that it took 21 years for Princess Anne to be appointed the title, as she had to wait until 1987 before her mother, Queen Elizabeth, bestowed it upon her, despite the vacancy since 1965.
Princess Mary was the previous Princess Royal, holding the title from 1932 to 1965.
She was the eldest and only daughter of King George V and Queen Mary.
Princess Charlotte’s eligibility for the title will depend on events unfolding in the future.
As we await the potential bestowal of the title of Princess Royal upon Princess Charlotte, it is clear that she holds a significant position in the royal family.
Her journey as a senior royal is just beginning, and we can expect to see her take on increasing responsibilities and roles in the years to come.
