Princess Charlotte, the eldest granddaughter of King Charles III, may receive a unique royal title due to a recent change of heart by the king.
As Charlotte, currently 7 years old, stands third in line to the throne, there is a possibility that she could be bestowed with a special royal title that was originally intended for her great-uncle, Prince Edward.
Initially, it was announced that Charlotte would not be granted the Edinburgh special title.
This announcement was made on the day of Prince Edward’s wedding to Sophie of Wessex in 1999.
It was declared that Charles’ younger brother would be given the title of Duke of Edinburgh, a title previously held by their late father, Prince Philip.
However, rumors began circulating that the king, who ascended to the throne the previous September, was reserving the title for his young granddaughter.
Recent reports suggest that Charles has now decided to honor his initial promise and grant Edward the title.
Nevertheless, it is still possible that Charles may request the title to be returned to the crown and instead pass it on to the future royal heirs.
The newspaper claims that if Edward is not given the title, it would be considered a disrespectful gesture towards the late queen’s youngest son.
However, it seems that the tide is turning in Edward’s favor, as the king has taken the time to consider the late queen’s wishes.
If all goes according to plan, Princess Charlotte could potentially be designated as the Princess Royal.
However, this will only happen once her father, Prince William, who is next in line for the throne, becomes king.
The title of Princess Royal, currently held by Princess Anne, is traditionally given to the eldest daughter of the king.
Duncan Larcombe, a royal expert and author, explains that since the title remains for life, Charlotte will have to wait until the current Princess Royal passes away.
Born in May 2015, Princess Charlotte is the first child of Prince William and Kate Middleton, who currently hold the titles of Prince and Princess of Wales.
The seven-year-old princess has two siblings, nine-year-old Prince George and four-year-old Prince Louis.
Charlotte and George have accompanied their parents to various royal events, most notably during the past year.
Their impeccable behavior at the late queen’s funeral in September earned them praise from royal fans.
Walking beside their mother, they made their way to Westminster Abbey, eleven days after the king’s passing.
