The royal family is mourning the loss of Maria Cynthia Roche, the aunt of the late Princess Diana.
Miss Roche, who was known for her close relationship with her niece, peacefully passed away at the age of 88 on March 3rd in her home.
Her passing may provide an opportunity for healing and reconciliation between Prince Harry and Prince William, as they may choose to attend her funeral service to pay their respects.
It is uncertain when the funeral will take place, but if both brothers attend, it will mark the first time they have seen each other in person since Queen Elizabeth’s funeral in September.
The relationship between the two has been strained in recent years, particularly with the publication of Harry’s memoir, Spare, which reportedly contains allusions and criticism against William and other members of the royal family.
If either sibling is unable to attend the funeral, the next likely occasion for them to meet in person will be the coronation of King Charles in May.
While a spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess confirmed that they will receive an invitation from the King’s office, it remains unknown whether they will attend.
Miss Roche was the sister of Frances Shan Kin, Princess Diana’s mother, and her family had close ties with the royal family.
Her father, Maurice Roche, was a friend of King George, and her mother, Ruth Baron’s Fairmoney, served as a confident and lady-in-waiting to the Queen Mother.
Throughout her life, Miss Roche experienced personal losses, including the death of her first husband, Sir Anthony Barry, in the 1984 Barrington Hotel bombing.
Her niece, Princess Diana, tragically died in a car crash 13 years later, and her younger sister, Frances, passed away in 2004.
Reflecting on Diana’s life, Miss Roche mentioned that she had observed her niece’s unhappiness at the pre-wedding reception held at Buckingham Palace in 1981.
She suggested that one of the reasons for the breakdown of Diana’s marriage to Prince Charles was their differing levels of maturity, with Diana being young and inexperienced while Prince Charles was a deep thinker who read extensively.
Miss Roche is survived by her son Edward and three daughters, Alexandra, Antonia, and Joanna.
Her passing serves as a reminder of the significance of family ties and how even distant relatives can shape our lives and relationships.
As we await further details about the funeral arrangements, it is hoped that this somber occasion will provide an opportunity for Prince Harry and Prince William to find common ground and reconcile their differences.
The royal family’s mourning may serve as a catalyst for healing and a chance for the brothers to reconnect.
