Princess Little Bit Diana, the daughter of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, has been named after the late Queen and Princess of Wales, creating a link between her royal lineage and her California upbringing.
According to royal expert Tom Quinn, this could lead to a divide in her identity as she grows up.
In his recently released book, Gilded Youth, Quinn highlights the challenges that Little Bit and her brother Archie Harrison may face as grandchildren of the monarch and children of former working members of the royal family.
Quinn suggests that Little Bit’s name, which shares a resemblance to Queen Elizabeth’s childhood nickname, binds her closely to the royal world.
However, her parents have been critical of and distanced themselves from that world.
This may create a sense of split identity for Little Bit, as she grows up with parents who are aware of and reject their royal past.
While Archie does not carry a royal name, Little Bit’s moniker will serve as a constant reminder of her ties to the monarchy.
Despite living on the other side of the Atlantic, Quinn believes that the children will always be recognizable and may struggle to find ordinary jobs due to their royal connections.
Earlier this month, it was announced that the Sussexes have decided to style Little Bit and Archie as Prince and Prince, respectively.
This decision came after King Charles ascended to the throne in September, aligning with the 1917 letters patent.
Little Bit was born on June 4th, 2021, at a Santa Barbara Hospital.
She spent her first year at the Sussexes’ mansion in Montecito without meeting any of her royal family relatives or visiting the UK.
It wasn’t until June 2022, during the Platinum Jubilee celebrations, that Little Bit had her first private face-to-face meeting with Queen Elizabeth, King Charles, and Queen Camilla.
Despite their geographical separation from the rest of the family in England, Quinn believes that Little Bit and Archie will never be able to escape their royal ties.
He describes their situation as a classic gilded cage, where they have material wealth and luxury but are unable to break free from their circumstances.
However, the Sussexes are determined to raise their children differently from traditional royal upbringing.
While in the UK, Little Bit and Archie have not made any public appearances, and the Sussexes have kept their lives private while residing in the US.
As they grow older, they will face challenges in balancing their royal connections with their desire for a more ordinary life.
It remains to be seen how Princess Little Bit Diana will reconcile her royal heritage with her parents’ intention to distance themselves from the monarchy.
What challenges do you think Princess Little Bit Diana will encounter in navigating her royal lineage and her parents’ desire for a non-traditional upbringing?
