Queen Camilla of the British Royal Family has taken up ballet classes with a dance group for the over-50s to maintain her fitness and overall health.
Inspired by a visit to the Royal Academy of Dance, Queen Camilla became an enthusiastic dancer and proudly refers to herself as a devoted Silver Swan.
Joining her in these classes is none other than Angela Rippon, a former TV presenter and a sensation on Strictly Come Dancing.
Angela credits ballet for helping her shine on the dance floor during her time on the show.
During a conversation with Angela Rippon and retired ballerina Dame Darcy Bussell, Queen Camilla, who is 76 years old, shared her initial skepticism about the Silver Swans class.
She had imagined a group of elderly individuals wobbling about on one leg.
However, she was pleasantly surprised to witness the skill and talent displayed by the dancers.
Encouraged by her experience, the Queen decided to gather a group of friends and join the classes, which they now attend once a week while in London.
When asked about her motivation to stay active, Queen Camilla emphasized the importance of keeping one’s body in motion.
She believes that physical activity, even if it’s just for 10 or 20 minutes a day, sets a positive tone for the rest of the day.
In addition to ballet, Queen Camilla also engages in Pilates and enjoys walking, which helps keep her bones strong—a cause she actively supports as the president of the Royal Osteoporosis Society.
Angela Rippon, who is 79 years old and the oldest contestant in Strictly history, wholeheartedly recommends dancing to people of all ages.
She believes that ballet, in particular, strengthens the core, improves balance, and increases flexibility.
Beyond the physical benefits, Angela highlights the social aspect of dance, emphasizing the enjoyment of connecting with others while engaging in this form of exercise.
Scientifically proven to be the best all-round physical and mental activity for older individuals, dancing is crucial for maintaining a healthy and fulfilling life, especially in an aging population.
Silver Swans, the ballet class specifically designed for older learners, has gained popularity worldwide.
With members in over 50 countries, there are currently 1,407 licensed Silver Swans teachers, 551 of whom are based in the UK.
Queen Camilla’s interest in the Silver Swans was sparked during her visit to the Royal Academy of Dance headquarters in 2018.
Since then, she has actively promoted the health benefits of ballet for older individuals through the Royal Family’s Instagram account and has sent special messages to the Silver Swans community on important occasions.
Christella Soteriou, a 65-year-old member of the Silver Swans class from South West London, attests to the positive impact ballet has had on her life.
Apart from being a great form of exercise, attending weekly ballet classes has helped her navigate challenging times and introduced her to a supportive community.
Similarly, Nikki Butler, a 66-year-old former professional ballet dancer, rediscovered her love for ballet after a 40-year hiatus.
Returning to dance through the Silver Swans classes, Nikki finds joy in the discipline and expression of ballet, as well as the camaraderie she shares with her fellow dancers.
The Royal Academy of Dance firmly believes that everyone can dance, considering it not just a form of exercise but also a means to improve overall health and well-being.
While Queen Camilla has found solace and enjoyment in her ballet classes, she admits that convincing King Charles to join her might not be a successful endeavor.
However, she proudly acknowledges his remarkable fitness and love for walking, describing him as a “mountain goat” who leaves everyone miles behind.
As the Queen gracefully takes her place among the Silver Swans, she continues to inspire others to embrace physical activity and enjoy the countless benefits it brings, both physically and mentally.
Whether it’s through ballet or any other form of dance, staying active is vital for a healthy and fulfilling life, regardless of age.
