Following Queen Consort Camilla’s marriage to King Charles in 2005, Buckingham Palace had announced that Camilla could take the title of Princess Consort.
However, it has been reported that the royal family is hoping to quietly drop the title of Consort from Queen Camilla’s official designation.
According to the Telegraph, the title of Consort will be replaced with a simpler address of Queen Camilla ahead of King Charles’ official coronation next year.
Earlier this month, palace aides revealed that they would be happy for Camilla to drop the Consort title if there is sufficient public support.
There is hope that this change will occur before the coronation in Westminster Abbey on May 6, 2023.
Those close to the Queen and Queen Consort are reportedly relaxed about the use of a simpler title and intend for the public and press to adopt this change.
However, it is important to note that Camilla’s full title of Queen Consort will still be used for formal communications, including court circulars, written communications, and notes about her royal engagements.
The term Consort is traditionally used to refer to the spouse of the ruling monarch, but previous royals in this position have dropped the use of their names, such as Queen Mother, Queen Mary, and Queen Alexandria.
Camilla was originally due to be known as Princess Consort when her husband ascended the throne, as she is his second wife.
However, on the 70th anniversary of her ascension, the late monarch honored Camilla with the Queen Consort title.
This decision sparked debates among readers, with some arguing that Camilla should be recognized as Queen Camilla, stating that it is time to move with the times.
