Queen Margaret II of Denmark surprised royal enthusiasts on New Year’s Eve with her announcement to step down as monarch.
On January 14th, the 52nd anniversary of her reign, she will abdicate the throne in favor of her son, Crown Prince Frederik, and his wife, Crown Princess Mary.
This historic decision makes Crown Princess Mary the first Australian-born Queen of Denmark, earning her a significant place in history.
Meanwhile, some fans of Meghan Markle can’t help but fantasize about a similar fate for the American actress-turned-duchess.
While it is highly unlikely that Crown Princess Mary and Meghan Markle have ever crossed paths, they do share contrasting backgrounds and personalities.
In 2004, when Mary married Frederik, the Danish parliament enacted a law known as “Mary’s Law.”
This legislation allowed any foreign royal spouse to acquire Danish citizenship, which Mary did.
However, she had to relinquish her dual Australian and British citizenship upon marriage.
On the other hand, Meghan Markle did not have a law named after her.
She retained her American citizenship even after marrying Prince Harry.
Crown Princess Mary faced her own set of challenges when she became engaged to Crown Prince Frederik.
Within approximately 18 months, she learned Danish, although her children often tease her about speaking the language with an Australian accent.
Mary’s decision to marry into Danish royalty required her to renounce her Australian citizenship, convert to a new religion, and acquaint herself with Danish history and culture.
Additionally, she had to adapt to the pressures of transitioning from an ordinary individual to one of the most prominent and scrutinized women worldwide.
Despite these obstacles, Mary handled her new role without complaint to the media—a contrast to Meghan Markle’s approach.
In contrast to Mary, Meghan Markle did not need to learn a new language upon marrying Prince Harry.
While she has some knowledge of French and Spanish, it remains uncertain whether she can read or write in these languages.
It is important to note that a basic understanding of a language does not equate to fluency.
Mary had much to learn as a Danish royal, but she did not publicly voice her grievances or publish a book about her experiences.
Meghan Markle, however, has been outspoken about her time as a royal and has authorized biographies to be written about her life.
She has also given interviews that many perceive as threatening and detrimental to the British royal family.
Since stepping down as a senior royal in 2020, Meghan has remained in the public eye by frequently criticizing the institution and the British press.
Despite having prior experience with fame, she has extensively complained about her interactions with the media.
Interestingly, before meeting Prince Harry, Meghan had cultivated relationships with British tabloid journalists like Piers Morgan.
In contrast, Mary had no prior experience with the media before becoming a royal.
Royal expert Phil Dampier expressed his belief that Mary would likely disapprove of Meghan’s actions, stating, “I’m sure that Mary looks at what Meghan has done and is horrified by it.”
Dampier further explained that Mary is dedicated to her role in supporting Queen Margaret and likely feels that Harry and Meghan have let down Queen Elizabeth.
He added, “If Mary had acted similarly to Meghan, it would be as if she married Frederick and then, within two years, lured him back to Australia, where they initially met, thus separating him from his family and destiny.”
In other royal news, Catherine, the Princess of Wales, is expected to don a new dress and tiara for an upcoming prestigious event in Denmark.
However, it seems unlikely that Harry and Meghan will receive an invitation to attend.
