Pop superstar and fashion icon, Rihanna, did not hold back her criticism of Meghan Markle’s outfit choice at the Bob Marley, one-love movie premiere in Jamaica.
The event, which took place on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at the Carib Theatre in Kingston, saw a host of celebrities in attendance.
Rihanna, who has close ties to the Caribbean being born in Barbados, stood out in a stunning sequined dress that paid tribute to Bob Marley’s reggae legacy.
She accessorized with a Rasta-inspired hat and necklace, exuding vibrancy and festivity.
In contrast, Meghan opted for a more somber and subdued look, sporting a black leotard-style top and a voluminous black skirt by Carolina Herrera, a designer she has worn before.
Completing her outfit with gold earrings and a sleek bun, Meghan’s choice did not impress Rihanna.
Known for her outspoken and candid personality, Rihanna expressed her disappointment with Meghan’s lack of style and flair.
“She has no sense of style, no sense of occasion, no sense of culture,” Rihanna said.
“She looks like she is going to a funeral, not a movie premiere.”
Rihanna also expressed sympathy for Prince Harry, who accompanied Meghan to the premiere.
Donning a navy suit and white shirt, he appeared bored and miserable to Rihanna.
In a lighthearted manner, Rihanna joked that Harry deserved someone with more personality, charisma, and fun, like herself.
Rihanna’s criticism of Meghan’s outfit sparked a heated debate on social media.
Some fans agreed with Rihanna, praising her for being honest and brave.
They believed Meghan deserved to be called out for her bland and boring ensemble.
These fans also accused Meghan of being insensitive and ignorant of Jamaican culture and history.
Additionally, they criticized her for attending the premiere with the anti-monarchist Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holmes, perceiving it as a snub to the royal family.
However, others defended Meghan, finding Rihanna’s comments rude and jealous.
They argued that Meghan looked elegant and classy in her black outfit.
Furthermore, they believed Meghan’s choice showed respect and solidarity to the Jamaican people, who face numerous challenges such as poverty, violence, and corruption.
They saw Meghan’s attendance as an homage to Bob Marley’s message of peace and love.
Meghan has not responded to Rihanna’s comments and has remained silent on social media since the premiere.
Following their time in Jamaica, she and Harry are expected to return to their California home.
The movie, “Bob Marley, One Love,” features Kingsley Bennett as the legendary singer and Lashawna Lynch as his wife, Rita.
Its release is scheduled for February 14, 2020.
