Rose Matifeo, the winner of the Best Act at the Edinburgh Comedy Awards 2018, recently shared an uncomfortable encounter she had with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry during the Royal Variety Performance.
In an episode of Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett’s The Dish podcast, the New Zealand comedian revealed that her attempt at telling a joke didn’t go as planned.
Taking the stage at the London Palladium, Rose delivered some hilarious lines to the royal couple, including Meghan Markle.
However, she now admits that it was not her favorite performance.
Her joke about the sea of white hair in the audience was intended to be ironic, with the idea that the worse the situation, the better the joke.
Unfortunately, many attendees didn’t catch the irony.
After her failed attempt at humor, Rose received some consolation from Meghan Markle, who tried to minimize the fallout.
Rose described the moment as Meghan slipping in as Mrs. Danvers and saying, “You must be so proud.”
This unexpected support left Rose pondering whether she should sacrifice herself for the sake of her royal family.
Despite this awkward experience, Rose continued to work on her craft.
Winning the Edinburgh Comedy Awards not only landed her a gig at the Royal Court but also provided her with the necessary support to produce the TV romantic comedy Start Struck.
Rose Matifeo’s encounter with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry serves as a reminder that even talented comedians can have off nights.
The pressure of performing in front of royalty can sometimes lead to unexpected outcomes.
Nonetheless, Rose’s ability to reflect on the experience and continue pursuing her career demonstrates her resilience and determination.
